 Patriot's Day Celebration

Each year the first battle of the American Revolution, that began with the "shot heard round the world", is commemorated with parades, re-enactments, a Ball and ceremonies. It all begins on April 7th with Bedford's Pole-capping, the Paul Revere Capture Ceremony and Concord's Meriam's Corner Exercise. Your Innkeeper, Gregory, will act in his capacity as Clergy to offer an Invocation at Meriam's Corner, a parcel of land owned by his ancestors in the 1600s. The list of colorful events continue on the 14th + 15th with two days filled with muskets, black powder and colonial dress. See  schedule of events..

Featured Day-Trip: Tower Hill Botanic Garden
 Camelias

Established in 1842, the Worcester County Horticultural Society established Tower Hill Botanic Gardens as a 132 acre showcase of ornamental, edible and native New England plants. The indoor Orangeri and the Limomaia are filled with exotics and imports that provide a year-long  riot of color and scent. We recently visited for the 183 annual Camellia show. Tower Hill will host an African Violet show in April, and May brings a Seven-State Daffodil and Primrose competition.

 Squirrels In a Nutshell

We have been watching squirrels lately. There is a hole in an old maple tree behind the Inn that serves as an entrance to a home for six Gray Squirrels. We are waiting for the "kittens" to emerge from the drey. Squirrels breed twice a year and  birth 6-10 in a litter. "Squirrel" is a derivative of the Greek word Skiouros, meaning "shadow tail". They are terrifically athletic and can leap more than 20 feet, run up to 20 mph, and can fall 100 feet without damage. Squirrels are known to be the cleanest of rodents, grooming many times a day. If they have gotten into your attic and confounded you by chewing the electrical wires it is because they are using the plastic sheathing  to clean their teeth!
