TIRS Students Work at In From The Cold

Over the past eight years, students from TIRS high school program have worked at In From the Cold.  This program, run by Parkdale United Church for the poor, homeless and lonely, provides a warm place to gather, activities such as reading and art, and a nutritious 4 course meal on Saturdays during the winter months.    On Dec 11, fourteen students from the Grades 8-10 classes, served over 120 needy people a seafood dinner.  This program serves some of the poorest people in the city.   Many of the guests coming for dinner live in shelters and leave directly after dinner to ensure they can get a bed on the coldest days at Shepherds of Good Hope or the Mission.  Working as part of a team of volunteers the TIRS students interact directly with the guests and are given adult responsibilities to ensure the smooth running of this much needed service.  Our students always represent Temple Israel in the most positive way and it is telling that many of the students continue to volunteer at IFTC on their own time during the winter.  Grade 7's and their parents will be volunteering on Jan 15.

Shalom

I hope that your entire family is enjoying the winter holidays. There have been a few, not many, questions asked about the events of Wednesday November 17th.  I thought I would clarify what happened and our response.
Shortly after 4:30, when school was scheduled to begin, a car struck an electrical pole causing an electrical failure in the neighboorhood of the school.  The supervisor contacted any parent still in the building or in the parking lot and encouraged them to take their children home.  Most children were able to leave.  Some children were not.
Due to the lack of electricity there was no phone service in the building, the answering machine did not work, the computers did not work and some cell phones did not work. As this was a neighboorhood blackout there were no phones or electricity available at the Hellenic centre.
The emergency lights in the basement and throughout the building worked.  They are, however equipped with batteries whose life span is thirty minutes.
At no time did the supervisory staff leave children unattended.  Eventually all chidren were picked up or taken home by our staff.
We have evaluated our emergency procedures and believe that given all the circumstances and timing we acted in the best interests of the children.  Sometimes "unforeseen circumstances" arise and our options are limited.
We will continue to provide a safe and secure situation for your children, our students, and will continue to evaluate our procedures.
Hopefully this will not happen again, but who knows what "other act of the Divine" will challenge us.  I have every confidence that these events will be handeled as professionally as the events in November.
L'Shalom,
Rabbi G

TIRS High School Learning in Action

The TIRS High School has enjoyed a very successful term.  The students have been keen and eager to participate and learn together.  We have listened to a number of speakers focusing on Tzedakah and g'milut chasidim.  Looking at what we can actually do when we are in grades 7-10 is a focus for us at TIRS.  The grade 7 class had a fantastic time making soup for B'kavod Ladle.  The grade 8-10s made almost 90 sandwiches which were delivered the next day to much applause at Centre 454.

We have been taking our learning off site too.  The grade 8s learned about our Jewish community and toured the JCC.  The grade 9/10s attended the movie Nuremberg: Its Lessons for Today as part of Holocaust Education week.

Looking to next term, the grade 9/10 class will be helping to lead the Shabbat Shira service on Saturday, January 15.   The grade 7 class is gearing up for B'nai Mitzvah season and look forward to the support of the entire congregation.  As well, each student from grades 8 to 10 will be chanting a maftir in 2011.  Please come to services and encourage the students in their leadership roles in our Temple community.
