| GEMMA'S PHOTO GALLERY | |

Looking at the market through the lens of Gemma Billings' camera always makes me wonder if I was paying attention the previous week! I always see something new in Gemma's photos. Take a look at this week's slideshow to see what YOU might have missed at last Saturday's market. (BTW, it's Gemma's birthday this week. She's going to take a break from her photography duties and treat herself to a Farmers' Market Bloody Mary at A. Renee's instead. Happy Birthday, Gemma!) |

WHAT TO DO WITH OKRA | |
Caroline shares step-by-step instructions for oven-fried okra with basil -- a delicious recipe from Jackie Dearing of Dearing Country Farms. If you make this recipe, Caroline promises "your house is going to smell so amazingly good, you're going to have a hard time staying out of the oven." Read Caroline's blog for the recipe -- and more details on her relationship with okra. |

| GOOGLE A RECIPE
ZESTY CORN & CUCUMBER SALAD | At this time of year, we end up with a huge variety of fresh veggies in our fridge -- and we find it can be a challenge to put together meals that use everything in a timely manner. That's how we learned about Googling a recipe. We just enter a bunch of ingredients and add "recipe" to the end. We have discovered quite a few unexpected but delicious recipes that way. Here is one that gets bonus points because it helps reduce our stockpile of cucumbers! Combine the following ingredients in a large bowl: 1 large cucumber, diced 2 ears of corn, cut off the cob (roasted on the grill or under the broiler until lightly charred) 2 tomatoes, diced 1/2 onion, chopped 1 jalapeńo, seeded and minced
Whisk the following ingredients together and toss with the vegetables: Juice of one lime 2 teaspoons ground cumin (freshly ground is especially tasty) 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Garnish with chopped cilantro, if desired. This is best if it is not chilled before serving -- but can also be served cold. |
| WHAT'S FRESH THIS WEEK? | |

Muskmelons (cantaloupes), ground cherries, okra, sweet corn, peaches, tomatoes, leeks, eggplant, green beans, summer squash, cucumbers, prairie flower bouquets tied with lace, blueberries, raspberries (red and black), potatoes (red, white, and blue), beets, salad mix, romaine, mizuna, green onions, radish, assorted varieties of lettuce, broccoli, bok choy, turnips, carrots, and assorted herbs (rosemary, sage, thyme, cilantro, mint, chives, , shallots), honey, popcorn, cornmeal, whole wheat berries, dry soybeans, and freshly ground whole wheat flour. A special feature this time of year is a wide variety of hanging baskets and homegrown bedding plants -- vegetables, heirloom tomatoes, herbs, aloe vera, and perennials -- for planting in your home garden.
The market also has fine local arts and crafts, fresh eggs, pastured certified organic and certified naturally grown poultry, natural and certified organic hormone-free beef, and local cheeses -- including artisan goat cheese, farmstead fruit preserves, coffee-infused syrups, pasta, homemade soup, granola, homemade pita chps, hummus, fresh-baked breads, croissants, pies, and other bakery goods, homemade soups, herb vinegars, organic sauerkraut, and local farm-raised tilapia. |
