Miracles don't have to be very big. In fact, usually they're not. Usually they're unobtrusive enough that, if you don't want to have miracles in your life, you won't even notice them.
One of my favorite things about Montana is the song of the meadowlark. It's the state bird, but that's not why I like it. It's beautiful. Profound. It reminds me of early mornings, tramping through young alfalfa as the sun is rising, a shovel over my shoulder, a couple of dogs traipsing along beside me.
So...
Out in the dryland the other day, I tried to get close enough to a meadowlark to get his picture. Only after he flew away did Adele remind me that my camera takes video. With sound. So for the rest of our time there I had my eye open. But no. Didn't see another.
By Monday this week, we were ready to be home. We started out, were going to drive straight through, but made it only as far as Nephi, Utah, where we got a cheap room. Had a quick four hours sleep, then back on the road by 6:00 a.m.
As the sun was rising, I saw a shot to get, so we pulled off the highway. (The shot is below.) Setting up my tripod, I heard a meadowlark in the adjacent pasture and was able to take the video. (The video is here.) A beautiful song, with some Angus in the background. Heaven on earth.
Again, not a very big miracle. For some reading this, not a miracle at all. But nature is here with us all the time. And when we are trying to align ourselves with the flow of nature, nature lets us know how we're doing. When we're in the right direction, we get little miracles. "Matches," as my friend, Bird, says.
Huh. There's a match right there...
