Recipe of the Month

 Grilled Chicken with Tomato-Avocado Salsa

This recipe serves: 4

For the salsa
4 ripe plum tomatoes, chopped or 12 cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 small red onion, finely chopped
1 jalapeņo chili pepper, seeded and diced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 avocado

For the chicken
1/2 cup non-fat, plain yogurt
1/2 small red onion
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup fresh cilantro
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, about 4 to 6 ounces each
salt to taste
freshly ground black pepper

For the salsa:
1. In a small bowl, combine the tomatoes, red onion, pepper and cilantro. 2. Chop the avocado and sprinkle it with 2 tablespoons of lime juice to keep it from browning. Add the avocado and remaining lime juice to the bowl and toss to combine.
(This can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.) For the chicken:
1. In a small food processor, puree the yogurt, red onion, lime juice and cilantro to make a yogurt marinade. 2. Transfer the marinade to a shallow bowl or a plastic bag. Add the chicken and coat well with the marinade. Refrigerate for 1 hour or up to 8 hours. 3. Preheat the grill to medium-high. 4. Remove the chicken from the marinade, discard the remaining marinade and season the chicken with salt and pepper. Grill the chicken on both sides until it is cooked through, about 6 minutes per side. 5. Serve the chicken with tomato-avocado salsa. Serving Size: 1 chicken breast with salsa

BAC Fitness Maniac of the Month

Cynthia Rodriguez

Cynthia has been a member of Brenda Athletic Clubs for over 11 years. You can find Cynthia in the cardio, weight or group exercise room. She is famous for her "never give up" and "kick butt" attitude in our evening PUSH and EXTREME PUSH class.

What does Cynthia have to say about being a member of Brenda Athletic Clubs?

I have been working on my fitness for over 11 years at Brenda Athletic Clubs and right now I am more fit than I have ever been in my life! I am in my Mid 40's and a single mother of 3 sons. With my competitive nature I just completed and won the last BAC boot camp and received a free bootcamp! In the boot camp I lost 10lbs, 9.5 inches and 4% body fat and am looking forward to the next boot camp or group training. I also enjoy doing the daily Group X classes and my cardio. I love being a member at BAC because of the great atmosphere and people. I look forward to coming in everyday to do my workouts.

BAC FIT TIP

Strength Training Benefits More than Muscles

Regular weight training does more than just build better muscles, it builds a better, healthier body.

Several new studies confirm the benefits of mild-to-moderate resistance training, which includes reduced blood pressure, lower LDL (''bad'') cholesterol levels and higher HDL (''good'') cholesterol levels, all of which improve cardiovascular health overall.

Weight training is also believed to improve the way the body processes sugar, which could reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

Another study examined the effect of weight training on osteoarthritis, a common condition among older adults that affects balance and increases the risk of falling. This study and others confirm that exercise of any kind improves strength, gait and ability to perform activities of daily living among older adults with osteoarthritis, and, in many cases, reduces the pain associated with the disease.

BAC NUTRITION TIP

Not Sure How You Feel?

Think About What You Ate

The foods you crave may say a lot about the state of your mind and body.

Researchers in France analyzed the eating habits and cravings of more than a thousand men and women and came to the following conclusions:

Women crave food more often than men do, with cravings peaking during times of sadness or anxiety.

Men are more likely to eat when they're feeling happy.

Chocolate cravings may signal that you are tired.

An urge for salty foods or dairy products may be your body's way of telling you it wants a real meal.

Those who had the most frequent cravings were more likely to be on a diet or actively trying to lose weight.
Researchers theorize that women may experience more cravings because of the increased social pressure to be thin, which also leads them to diet more frequently than men.

However, the relationship between food and mood is extremely complex, and is affected by both biological and psychological factors.

BAC Fitness Trainer of the Month

Leann Escobar

Leann joined the personal training team at Brenda Athletic Clubs in 2007. She has taught health & fitness seminars, and spent her time motivating clients to be healthy & fit! Her knowledge and passion for a healthy lifestyle reaches everyone she comes into contact with! Thanks Leann!

Leann says:
I have really been pleased with my decision to make Brenda Athletic Clubs my home away from home. I have gained a great deal of experience here as a trainer being able to work with a wide variety of fantastic clients. The facilities and family atmosphere has been an essential key to the success of the members in their fitness goals. Everyone feels so welcome and comfortable. I hope that I can work here for many years to come. It has been a great privilege to be able to affect the lives and health of the members that I have worked with. Everyone can benefit greatly from an increase of physical and social activities that abound here at the Modesto Fitness and Racquet club.

Muscle Does NOT Turn Into Fat

Many of us may have this idea that muscle can simply morph into fat or vice versa. Look how we make this so easy on ourselves to even think that this is even possible. I'll explain to you how this idea is just not possible in the simplest way I can. First of all, muscle and fat are two completely different properties. We have muscles cells and we have fat cells. When we eat junk food and don't exercise, what happens is our fat cells expand; you still have the same number of fat cells. With muscle it's sort of the same idea but the other way around; the less you workout and pump iron, the smaller your muscle cells get. You still have the same amount of muscle cells and fat cells, it's basically how big or small they get with exercise and proper nutrition. What you essentially want is for your muscles cells to bigger then your fat cells, and just when you think that your muscle turned into fat, just remember that your fat cells have expanded and your muscle cells have shrunk-we don't want that!
