Mark Fairchilds, Tennis Director at Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club, is one of four 2008 inductees.

Tennis Hall of Fame Brunch that took place Thursday, July 17 at Stanford University, was

Press Release
The United States Tennis Association, Northern California Section, will induct four native Northern Californians into the Tennis Hall of Fame at a brunch on July 17 at Stanford University.  The class of '08 includes United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) board member and Modesto teaching pro Mark Fairchilds, USTA volunteer Liz Blum, former nationally ranked junior and collegiate champion Harry Likas, and world-class coach and teaching pro Lynne Rolley.

"This fine group of two men and two women, all homegrown from towns in Northern California, have all been involved in tennis on the national and international stages," said Margie Peterman, president, USTA Northern California.  "They have represented us well for a very long time and we are delighted to honor their fine achievements."

As is now tradition, the induction will take place during the Bank of the West Classic women's professional tournament at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Mark Fairchilds states, "Being inducted is the culmination of all the tennis I've ever played:  all the great people I've played against and all the great people I've partnered with."

Mark Fairchilds grew up in Aptos and started playing tennis at the Seascape Sports Club.  "I was nine or 10 years old and I was happy just messing around until I got to high school," says Mark.   It was in high school that Mark got "the bug" as many of us refer to it.  He played on his high school team , where a teammate named Mark Ramos, the No. 3 player in NorCal, ignited his competitive urges.  "From that point on I got really serious about tennis," comments Mark.

 Mark with wife Jill Fairchilds

After high school Mark went to West Valley College and was the No.1 singles player.  He then transferred to the University of the Pacific, where he was also No. 1.  After receiving a bachelor's degree in mathematics, Mark went on the pro tour where he experienced perhaps high greatest victory.  "I was playing a money tournament near Nice, France, against a Frenchman, Jean Philippe Florian.  He was ranked No. 2 in France and he had about 5,000 people there rooting for him.  There was not one person there rooting for me.  I beat him - in three sets and on the clay.  What a day."

Another notable victory:   "I beat Pete Sampras once, 6-2, 6-2.  He was 14 years old but you could see the incredible talent even then."

BAC FIT TIP

Heat exhaustion and its more serious counterpart heat stroke are not to be trifled with. One way to prevent both is to avoid becoming dehydrated. Athletes and avid exercisers are at risk of dehydration if they sweat profusely and don't replenish themselves while working out.

Symptoms of dehydration include feeling dizzy, lightheaded, dry mouth or throat, stomach cramps, and not urinating or producing dark-colored urine. If you notice these symptoms, hydrate yourself immediately with water. To prevent dehydration in the first place, be sure to drink water throughout your day. If you're not sure how much water you should consume daily, then check out Fit's calculator to find out. If you plan on exercising, drink eight ounces of water 20-30 minutes beforehand. Continue to drink four to eight ounces every 10 to 15 minutes of exercise, and drink at least eight ounces after your workout is complete.

Do know that you can overhydrate and experience symptoms of hypnotremia, a condition where the sodium in your blood is diluted by excess water. In really hot, sweaty conditions it is beneficial to drink a sports drink fortified with sodium and electrolytes

Isn't exercising at a lower intensity better for burning fat?

There is an assumption floating around fitness facilities that the best way to shed bodyfat (and lose weight) is to exercise at a low intensity for a longer amount of time.  These lower intensity workouts are usually referred to as FAT BURNING ZONE.

This thought comes from the fact that exercising at low level intensities burns a higher percentage of fat than higher intensity exercise. While this is true, it might not guarantee more calories will be used during low exercise intensities, or that lower exercise intensities will equal a greater weight loss.

It is true that the lower the exercise intensity the higher percentage of fat used. So, if you walk rather than jog, and jog rather than run it appears you tap into your bodies stored fat cells for energy more readily.  However, exercising at 60% of your age predicted maximum heart rate for 30 minutes may burn 200 calories - (depending on your body weight) Of these 200 calories, 50 percent may come from stored fats. Thus a total of 100 calories will come from fat, the remaining calories will come from carbohydrates and proteins.  However, exercising at 80% , a more intense effort, for the same duration may burn 300 calories more; a total of 500 calories. But of this figure only 40 percent may come from stored fats.

Simplified- Higher intensity workouts not only burn more calories during your workout but also aid your body into burning more calories at rest - High intensity workouts actually turn the body into a more efficient calorie burning machine!
