Hola!

Have you ever had the experience of suspecting that a friend or colleague is trying to "bring you down?"

Recently I had a quick meeting with a colleague that I do a lot of work with. I shared an idea that I was really excited about with her. I wanted to create an event very similar to the Summit but for teen girls and their moms. The idea would be to create sessions and programs around the idea of "Girl Power."

Her response was to give me several solid, logical reasons why the event wouldn't or couldn't work in Miami. She encouraged me to drop the idea and focus on what "really drives dollars: consulting." I walked away from our encounter deflated and ready to discard "Girl Power," telling myself she was probably right.

20 Public Speaking Tips Slideshow Title

... story, continued

Later that day, I met with a group of women who had attended the summit. They asked me "what's next"? I (very) tentatively threw out my idea for the Girl Power event. They LOVED it. They were ALL OVER it. They wanted to join the board, volunteer, introduce me to people, support the event, promote it... "anything you need, Michelle."

What happened?

It's not what you think.... It wasn't the difference between a "supporter" and a "hater" (which is what I originally thought). It's the difference between knowing and not knowing people's strengths and where they belong in your life, or in your business. The first person wasn't wrong. In fact, her comments were good ones. The problem was in WHEN I brought her into the picture.

That first person I shared my "dream" with first was, in fact, NOT A DREAMER, she is an ANALYZER. Her forte is sifting through information, finding and pointing out all the flaws. This isn't the kind of person I should have called on to be my cheerleader.

Notwithstanding the above, her input could be invaluable at a later stage of the game. Someone like that would be a perfect person to bring in once the plan is set, to find all the flaws in the plan, and get to work fixing them.

Understanding people's personality type, strengths and what their outlook is will go a long way in helping you to strategically tap into your network.

There are four basic types: Directors, Promoters, Analyzers and Nurturers. Each with their own unique skills and preferences. When you understand the nuances of type, you are better equipped to figure out how to harness each one's unique contributions more effectively. Here's a quick slideshow to take you through the 4 basic types.

For more in-depth personality typing, you can learn about the Myers-Briggs personality inventory, which gives you 16 more detailed types to play with.

Understanding type can help you in sales, networking, customer service, team-building, and almost any other business skill that involves working with other people. We do personality type work with ALL of our clients as I am officially trained and qualified to administer and interpret Myers-Briggs by the company that publishes the test.
