3 Easy-Breezy Starter Steps
For A Great Online Brand
These days, it's likely that someone will "meet" you online before they ever shake your hand. What does your online presence say to prospective clients, buyers or employers about who you are and what you do?

Cultivating your online brand is as important (and sometimes
even more important) as developing it it through traditional channels like networking, advertising or PR.

So how do you do it? Here are the basic steps:

1. Own your name. Lock in your free profiles at LinkedIn, Plaxo, Twitter, ZoomInfo, and any industry-specific business directories that get lots of traffic. The goal is to "own your name" everywhere you can - even if you don't plan to use them - so that no one ELSE gets them, and also because they'll get hits on Google (chances are those sites spend a lot more on advertising, marketing, SEO & PPC than you do!)

Don't forget to buy your URL www.yourname.com. Linking everything to one place will help to consolidate traffic and prevent the clicks from getting diluted by going to a bunch of different sites/places. If you don't have a website, you can point your URL to your LinkedIn profile page.

2. Show your face! People do business with people - not with "brands." So show your face with a great profile pic! One that reflects your brand - not a crop of a personal photo, not one that's 10 years old, not one of you out partying. You want a professional headshot that's aligned with your brand, like these:

3. Contribute VALUE to your field/clients. This can take MANY forms - popular ones include blogging, uploading content, posting videos, even Facebook... no matter what you choose (start with just one), make sure you name it and tag your name on EVERYTHING. To see how I do it, visit the content area on my website.

This is a very broad overview of how to start developing a web presence online.

If you're looking for specific, practical, tactical things you can do, then check out this month's workshop: You The Online Brand. It's perfect for beginners to intermediates who are ready to kick up their online brand.
