Navigating our pluralistic culture, one generation to the next . . .
Hi good friend!Karyn Head small

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  My husband and I had the privilege of hosting our parents - mine one week, his the next.  I felt a sense of awe watching my grandchildren interact with my parents.  As four generations joined hands around the dinner table, with tiny, smooth hands holding big, wrinkled hands, I was very conscious that I was a link between the older generation and the younger.  I continue to be very grateful that I get to not only witness, but also participate in that deep pleasure.

As I watched our recent national election returns, I became aware of a broader generational link.  Regardless of which presidential candidate you voted for, if you watched television that night, in the huge crowd that gathered in support of Obama, you saw the face of our nation --multi-ethnic, postmodern, pluralistic, Compass with shadowglobal, holistically oriented, young people (though not exclusively young)-- yearning for transformation.  Baby-boomers like me link the modern generation with the postmodern, the religious with the spiritual, church-attenders (assembly-focused) with non-church-attenders (network-focused).  Our world has changed and is changing, and sometimes it feels as if my generation is the pivot point.

At any rate, we and our kids are now
BQ1 with shadowmeeting people of many different religions and are being asked why we believe in Jesus.  Why do we consider Him the Way?  Many of us working with children have seen a need to prepare our kids to confidently navigate our pluralistic (many religions and philosophies), postmodern, networked world, while discovering and maintaining a strong faith in, and relationship with, Jesus.  My addition to that "conversation" is two quarterly studies for kids:  The Compass and Bridge-Quest, along with related books for teachers, parents, and older students.  If you feel the need to help deepen your kids' understanding of why it makes sense to believe in Jesus, and how a belief in Jesus compares to other religions, I invite you to consider these resources.

I wish you the best of holiday seasons.  May you experience deeply pleasurable gatherings with family and friends.  And may we generate peace on earth and good will toward all.

Merry Christmas!
By God's grace, to His glory,
