A Word from Karyn Workshops in January 2009. . .
|
|
Hi good friend!
Autumn is an inspiring time for me. There's something about red and golden leaves, the smell of wood smoke, and the chill in the air that engages my spirit and says it's time to get things done. I have friends in Vermont and Canada who would chuckle at my October "chill in the air," because they felt that chill in August and are now getting snow. Of course, that's exciting too.
Part of what I must do in the next few weeks is create the handouts for the Children's Pastor's Conference to be held January 5-8, 2009 in Nashville. (If you can't attend, please keep reading for important information). So I thought I'd give you a preview. I'll be teaching three workshops. Here's a peek into what I'll talk about...
- Head to Head, Heart to Heart: Communicating Successfully with Kids
"We use the same words, but we don't speak the same language," a young person once said. The most important message in the world loses its power if we cannot communicate it effectively. But in an information-saturated age, how do we get the message through loud and clear? We will look at the most effective communication for kids of different ages, find out how to keep the lines of communication open, and learn practical tips by seeing how Jesus did it.
- Writing Your Own Curriculum: Pros, Cons, and How-To's
Maybe you are considering writing your own curriculum. Maybe you've already begun, but you're unsure as to how to proceed. Or maybe you would simply like to know how it's done and gain insights that might help you choose which curriculum to purchase. We will look at the pros and cons of writing versus buying your curriculum, and then we'll consider the how-to's: setting goals, getting ideas, and deciding what "drives" your curriculum.
- Teaching Children to Pray
This workshop is a repeat of the one I did at CPC 2008, and is back by request. If you've heard me speak lately, you will know that I emphasize prayer as a key in helping children get to know God. We will talk about how children's perceptions of God influence their prayer life. We'll consider myths and realities about prayer. Then we will look at practical patterns and projects you can use to teach children to pray - training-wheels for prayer, so to speak.
If you're not able to attend this next CPC, watch for us to offer the recordings of these sessions on our website sometime in late January. One of those cold, snowy winter nights might be the perfect time to snuggle next to the fire and listen to encouraging ideas about and for kids.
Happy Autumn! By God's grace, to His glory,

Karyn Henley
