A Word from Karyn Teenagers Rebel Against Low Expectations . . .
|
|
Hi good friend!
I've noticed something on Sunday mornings for some time now: Our worship leaders often guide us to sing and pray about God's glory - asking God to send down more of His glory, reveal more of His glory, let us see His glory, and so on, as if begging God to thicken the air pressure to push us to our knees, or to fill our sanctuary with smoke or bright light or a rain of gold dust or - what?
Last Sunday, when a visiting worship leader called upon God to send His glory, I decided that the people truly experiencing God's glory are those of our congregation who were at that very moment building a house with Habitat for Humanity for a needy family across town. That has been my experience. The times I feel God's presence most are when I'm in the process of giving of my time and self for the benefit of others. Of course, my definition of glory is not a bright, blinding light or some such manifestation. To me, glory is "the revelation of who God is in all His life-giving love." Wherever I see God's life-giving love revealed is where I see His glory.
Maybe that's why I was struck by an editorial I read in the current issue of Mission Frontiers magazine. It contained a review of a fairly new book for teens (and those interested in teens) entitled Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations, written by teens Alex and Brett Harris. The editorial says the book addresses the fact that "today's teenagers are what-they-are because society does not expect (even allow) much from them," and teens harbor a "deep-seated exasperation" about the low expectations we place on their generation. So the Harris twins encourage other teens to go against the flow and lead out with real life-changing, world-altering deeds.
I've not read the book yet, but I've gone to the website, and it's full of insight from the teen point of view. One thing I've always said: If you want to know how to communicate with any age child or young adult, listen to them first. This website yields a great deal of insight, since it not only contains info, but blog responses from teens themselves. If you're interested, check out www.therebelution.com/about/rebelution.htm. Is it possible that while the older generation stands in church, begging God to let us see His glory, our young people are experiencing His glory by serving others where the rubber meets the road? Where would Jesus be?
Before I close, I want to announce that we've put 100 Ways to Teach Your Child About God back into print. Many of you have requested this book, so I'm happy to say it's back, full of object lessons to explain God's character in family devotionals, children's sermons, or classroom lessons. Just don't forget to give kids a real-life experience of God's glory by including them in serving others.
By God's grace, to His glory (i.e. to the revelation of His life-giving love),

Karyn Henley
