A Word from Karyn
Greetings!

This is a family month for us, as I'm sure it is for manyKaryn Head small of you.  My parents just spent a week with us to help celebrate my niece's graduation from high school.  Four generations sat around the table for Sunday lunch yesterday.  We'll be seeing more family as we travel in a couple of weeks to a nephew's wedding.  Times like these remind me that our relationships are the real treasures of life.  They also remind me of how fast children grow up!

Several years ago when I was homeschooling our two sons, I was also continuing my own studies in child development.  I found that researchers in moral development recommended that we tell children, as much as possible, why we ask them to behave certain ways so when we are not around, they have reasons to make the right moral choices.  In a research exercise, half of a group of children were told what to do and say when someone entered the room and attempted to distract them from a worksheet they were to complete.  They told the other children nothing.  The children who were told what to do and say resisted temptation much better than those who were not told what to do.

swordfighting improvedI thought about Jesus fighting temptation by quoting scripture.  Then my mind went to Ephesians 6:17, which calls the word of God the "sword of the Spirit."  I realized we could prepare children to fight temptation through scripture memorization.  For example, what will you do when you are tempted to be afraid?  You remind yourself, "I will not be afraid, because it is written:  'In God I trust.  I will not be afraid.' (Psalm 56:4)"  To make this fun, I wrote the temptations on cards and the scriptures on posterboard swords, and we made a family game of it (after all, it's not only kids who are tempted).  Eventually this became a book:  Sword Fighting

For classroom teachers, Sword-Fighting has tips on classroom use.  It works best for kids ages six through ten.  For family devos or homeschool, the book is set up to be used seven days a week.  It references the Day by Day Kid's Bible (or any other Bible) with stories of how people in the Bible successfully or unsuccessfully fought that temptation - and what happened as a result.  Because parents and teachers are currently planning in earnest for Fall, we are highlighting Sword Fighting this month.  But . . . heads up: Our offer for FREE copies of the Gospel of John from the NLT Kids Bible continues (while the supply lasts) and we've extended the early bird discount deadline thru July 1 for the Teaching Kids Why conference (with fuel prices so high, you might need a bit of extra time to consider your budget and the $30 savings).  Please visit www.KarynHenley.com for further details.

Have a wonderful June!

By God's grace, to His glory,

"Thank you for challenging me - for showing me how to think in new ways, to be open to where God wants our ministry to go..."

"We get so comfortable in our 'bubble' that we fail... to understand why we really believe what we believe... An awesome topic."
