A Word from Karyn

Hi Friend!
I just returned from the Children's Pastors' Conference in Florida, where the weather was balmy and the surroundings were Disney. As I write this, I think of some of you who are knee-deep in snow. This time of year here in Tennessee, the weather is fickle. Yesterday was a nice mid-fifties day, then last night we got slammed with high winds and freezing temperatures. My preschool grandchildren would love to see some real snow. But the weather says maybe, maybe not. Anyway, I hope wherever you are, the weather of your heart is just right.
 I'm excited this month to introduce something I've been concentrating on for the last few months: a curriculum for 8-11 year olds on the life of Jesus. What makes this exciting - at least for me - is the approach: placing Jesus in His historical context. Why would I do that?
1) Because too often, Jesus seems like a cardboard character to kids. You might think that going back into history would make Him even more distant. Ironically, the reverse is true. Placing Him in the setting of ancient Palestine brings His teachings to life. It helps us better understand what He said and did, and why.
2) Because the Bible is telling a real story. Real stories always have settings and supporting characters and subplots. Without that, the story lacks depth, reality, and meaning.
3) Because it's fascinating. It's fun to find out why the Pharisees were so upset over Jesus healing on the Sabbath. (You weren't allowed to carry anything that weighed more than two dried figs on the Sabbath - much less a mat.) It's fun to wash hands like they did.
Of course, the point is not history - the point is the love of God revealed. So in every lesson, interesting historical facts provide a framework for understanding Jesus' message and how He revealed God's love. By the way, I spoke on this at CPC last week, and I'll repeat the topic at CPC San Diego in early March. After that, we hope to have a recording of the talk that you can download and listen to. So check with us after March if you're interested.
To go along with this curriculum, I've recorded the life of Jesus from the Day by Day Kid's Bible on cd. It's not necessary to use it with this curriculum, but I wanted to make it available. Kids read less and less these days, so some will prefer to hear the passages. And some families will want to use these cd's as part of their devotional time or drive time. My husband and I have discovered that when you listen to the life of Jesus, profound truths pop out at you, insights you hadn't noticed when you read it. Anyway, I believe these cd's will be a great blessing not only to kids but to adults as well.

It is an excellent fit with the Day By Day Kids Bible, or can be used with any traditional translation of the Bible. This curriculum is also cross-referenced with the new Day by Day Kid's Audio Bible: The Life of Jesus.
