A Word from Karyn

Hi Friend!
Hello again and Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
My family spent time in Texas with my three sisters and their families celebrating my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. It was a fun and busy occasion as four generations worked and (mostly) played together.
Speaking of generations, as you know, the high percentage of our young people who leave the church after graduating from high school has had us all scrambling to figure out what to do. This month, we are featuring my new book I Want to Believe, But I Can't: Why Our Kids Are Leaving Church. I don't claim to have all the answers, but I do try to wrestle with the complexity of the issue and try to assess it as honestly as I can, as well as suggest some direction for dealing with it. I think the most obvious answer to "Why?" has been staring us in the face for years. The question is: Are we willing to pay the price that will bring about a change?
By the way, I'll be seeing some of you at CPC (Children's Pastors' Conference) in Orlando at the end of this month and in San Diego in early March. You can get a sneak preview of my sessions by following the link provided here.
I wish you all the best of God's blessings in the New Year! By God's grace, to His glory,

I Want to Believe But I Can't Why Our Kids Are Leaving Church
|
|
"My son doesn't go to church anymore."
"My daughter is questioning everything she's ever been taught."
You've heard the statistics: 80 to 90 percent of Christian young people leave the church after high school. The kids who faithfully attended Sunday School and Youth Group over the last 15 years experienced the fresh enthusiasm of active, age-appropriate methods and new technologies in children's ministries.
They sang the hip Christian songs, watched the Christian cartoon videos, "jumped for Jesus" and ate the youth ministry pizza--and now they won't darken the doorway of a church building.
You tried. You were sincere. You still are.
So what happened?
In I Want to Believe But I Can't, Karyn Henley invites you to consider:
- How the "taken-for-grantedness" of children's faith can become a time-bomb.
- How our pluralistic, postmodern culture can affect a person's worldview.
- The well-intentioned, but intentional barriers we may have created that make it hard for kid's to believe.
- Practical ideas for communicating Jesus and His love to the next generation.
A must-read for every pastor, teacher and parent who genuinely cares about empowering children to live for God in the new millennium.
