A Word from Karyn

Hi good friend!
Welcome to the second issue of our online newsletter. This month we're featuring the Day by Day Begin-To-Read Bible for preschoolers and beginning readers as well as one of my latest books for teens, parents, and teachers, If God is Good, Why Do We Suffer? I'd like to share with you the three factors that nudged me toward writing this book.
One factor was my own faith-journey. I've become increasingly disturbed by the sheer quantity and depth of what seems to be senseless suffering in the world, and I wanted to explore the Why's for myself.
A second factor was the puzzled expressions on the faces of people who've listened to my talks on apologetics and pluralism. When I mention atheism, I say that one of the strongest cards atheists hold is the fact that there's so much suffering in the world. Surely, they say, a perfect, caring God of love would not allow the kind of suffering that goes on in our world every day. Then I say there are reasons a good, loving God might create a world in which there is evil and suffering, and I suggest that we should know and teach some of these reasons. Listeners often give me a quizzical look about that time, so I suspect they haven't thought through the problem.
The third factor is related to the second: atheist missionaries are out and about in our world and on the Internet. They actively seek out our kids and try to persuade them that belief in God is not reasonable. Our kids need to have a response. They need to know why they believe in Jesus (you might want to try my books Love Trumps Karma and Mall of Religions to explore this). And they need to know why a good God might allow people to suffer.
These are the reasons I decided to lay out the problem and list a variety of explanations for why God might allow suffering. I cover ten possible reasons, positions held by Christians through the ages. I don't try to tell you the "correct" belief to hold. As I say in the book, any one of these reasons, or a combination of them, gets God "off the hook." I suggest that you examine them and determine for yourself which one(s) you find worthy of holding.
I hope you and your kids find this new book helpful. I'll be speaking on this subject at the 2008 Children's Pastors' Conferences in San Diego and Orlando. Maybe I'll see you there. Meanwhile, many blessings to you. And happy reading! By God's grace, to His glory,

Learning to read--and learning about God--has never been more fun!
After seeing parents and older siblings read the Bible, young children look forward to reading the Bible on their own--but they are often disappointed when they try to read but still can't.
Karyn Henley, author of the original version of The Beginner's Bible and The Day-By-Day Kid's Bible, has developed the Begin-To-Read Bible to fit the needs of the young reader (or "soon-to-be" reader). One story a day is all it takes to start developing a love for God's word.

If God is Good, Why Do We Suffer? (Adults, Young Adults, Teens, Youth & Campus Ministers)
|
|
Why, God, Why?
- School shootings, child molesting, suicide bombings...
- Devastating tornadoes, tsunamis, hurricanes...
- Inoperable cancer, Alzheimer's, a child's terminal illness...
- Why is there pain, suffering, and evil?
For people who believe in a personal, all-powerful, loving God, the Why question is very real. How do you explain it to yourself? What's more, how do you explain it to your children, your friend, your co-worker?
The Why question is at the core of one of the most powerful arguments for atheists: If God were good, all-powerful, loving and caring, He could stop all this suffering. That means either He's not all-powerful, or He's not good, loving, and caring. Therefore, atheists reason, what you call "God" does not exist.
Is there a plausible explanation?
If God Is Good, Why Do We Suffer? explores ten legitimate, hope-filled conclusions for those who wrestle with the timeless "Why" questions of faith.
