"I can say confidently that this is a distinctive disorder that you don't develop in the general population," McKee said. "In fact, I have never seen this disease in any person who doesn't have the kind of repetitive head trauma that football players would have."

"A huge percentage of players in collision sports don't report their symptoms, and doctors and trainers on the sideline often can't see them," Cantu said. "But trained observers in the stands could see the big hits and players' reactions after big hits, and they had the ability to come down and examine the players and hold them out of the game if they showed signs of concussion."
