Carolyn started her own company, Manager Training Simplified, LLC to share her expertise in managing staff, dealing with employment law, creating employee handbooks, benefit administration, as well as training managers, department heads and other staffers. According to Carolyn, many managers rise to their positions without management training. "Giving them the management training they need helps protect one's company from legal pitfalls and costly lawsuits." For convenience, Manager Training Simplified offers onsite training. Classes offered range from "the Hiring Process" to "Conducting Performance Appraisals." "The Small Business Development Center helped me with startup issues and continues to be available as questions arise."

TEDCO Working Capital Loan Fund Still Available to Area Firms

TEDCO's Working Capital Loan Fund is designed to provide loans to incubation stage technology-related companies in Maryland.  The Fund can help companies expand, enter into new markets, hire more employees or other working capital related needs.  These loans are typically between $15,000 and $50,000 with low interest rates (usually below the market rate) and flexible terms. TEDCO has alerted its partners that funds are still available but must be expended by September of this year; therefore companies will need to move fast.  Interested companies can access the application at www.marylandtedco.org and the form is under "Funding Opportunities" (marylandtedco.org/tedcoprograms/wclf.cfm).   For further assistance, please contact Molly Chen, 301-547-6996, mchen@marylandtedco.org.

USDA Grant for Agricultural Businesses

Did you know that the USDA has grants available to eligible businesses in the agricultural industry?  The Rural Development Value Added Producer Grant, a USDA program aims to improve financial returns and help create jobs in the agricultural sector. Value-added products are created when a producer increases the value of an agricultural commodity in the production or processing stage.  USDA's Rural Development arm was created to help improve the economy and quality of life in rural America. USDA Rural Development administers and manages more than forty programs like the Value Added Producer Grant, designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers.

A recent recipient of the grant was the Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County.  They will use the funds to help operate the Port of Leonardtown Winery, formed to create a local market for grape growers in southern Maryland. The grant will help alleviate the costs associated with wine production, such as bottling supplies, marketing and labor. The Cooperative will lease a newly renovated, formally vacant building for its winemaking operations.
