NewOrganics Hires Chief Operating Officer
Introducing Thomas Bunkley

We are pleased to announce that Thomas Bunkley is joining our team as COO. Mr. Bunkley is a successful operations executive with comprehensive experience in the food and beverage industry. His background includes leadership roles in Corporate Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, and Risk Management.

Thomas BunkleyBunkley was most recently Vice President of Commercial Operations-North America Food Group for Mars, Inc. As a member of the executive management team, he delivered a significant increase in profits for his division by carefully managing supply chain, purchasing, copacking, and logistics processes and expenditures. Bunkley was also responsible for improving customer satisfaction levels, leading project implementation teams, and managing global strategies.

Bunkley has also served in key leadership roles for E. & J. Gallo Wines and Foster Farms after starting his career at Purina Mills.

Bunkley will oversee all operational aspects of NewOrganics, including supply chain and purchasing management, quality control, and financial expenditures. As a key member of the NewOrganics leadership team, he will be helping to develop strategic direction and business best-practices for the company.

Product Spotlight 
Edible Seeds

Edible seeds have high levels of healthy oils, some of which help to reduce cholesterol, improve brain and nerve function, Sesame Seedspromote healthy skin and hormone levels, and increase energy levels. This product group is now enjoying a resurgence as seeds are becoming more appreciated for the various nutrients (such as fiber and phytochemicals) that they provide to the human diet.

Our certified organic edible seed products include:

         Poppy Seeds contain significant amounts of calcium and phosphorus, and they also contain high levels of protein. Poppy seeds add texture and flavor to baked goods such as breads, cakes and muffins. Poppy seeds and the edible oil they produce are also common to other food applications such as salad dressings.

 

         Pumpkin Seeds offer high levels of protein, essential fatty acids, fiber, and beneficial vitamins and nutrients. Common applications for these healthy seeds include snack mixes and food bars.

 

         Sesame Seeds are used in several applications including bars, trail mixes, baked goods and tahini. High in protein, minerals, and amino acids, sesame seeds are nutritious and flavorful.

         Sunflower Seeds are high in calcium, essential fatty acids, protein, fiber, and vitamins. Sunflower seeds can be used in several applications such as snack foods, baked goods, veggie burgers, cereals, and sprouting. 

NewOrganics also offers sprouting seeds (wheat, barley, radish, red clover, alfalfa, and edible beans) and seeds of ancient grains (amaranth and quinoa). The health benefits and functionalities of these types of seeds will be covered in future editions of our newsletter, so stay tuned!

Health Awareness Boosts U.S. Soy Market

Food & Drink Europe recently summarized a report published by Packaged Facts which claims that "the U.S. market for soy foods and beverages is poised for strong growth as consumer awareness of the health benefits of soy increases." The report, Soy Foods and Beverages, estimates that the soy market will grow at "a healthy pace" to reach nearly $3 billion by 2012.

OTA is Optimistic About U.S. Farm Bill

Last month the Organic Trade Association released a press release stating that it is "pleased that the Farm Bill has passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate by majorities far beyond the two thirds vote necessary to override any Presidential veto." The bill in its current form would significantly increase mandatory spending on organic agriculture and allow organic farmers to qualify for certain government programs that they weren't able to access in the past.

Ancient Grains Used Increasingly in Processed Foods


Food Business News reports that the "numbe
r of new food products featuring ancient grains has doubled since 2004, per the Datamonitor Productscan Online database." Last year more than 500 new products were introduced worldwide that contained ancient grains such as quinoa, spelt, kamut, and amaranth.

Global Organic Farming: Continued Growth

A new report entitled "The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2008" shows that the U.S. still trails Australia, China, and Argentina in acreage devoted to organic production. The study, sponsored by IFOAM, FiBL, and S�L, also reveals that "the global market for organic products reached a value of 38.6 billion U.S. Dollars in 2006, with the vast majority of products being consumed in North America and Europe, according to Organic Monitor. This constitutes a growth of five billion U.S. Dollars compared to the 2005 data. Healthy growth rates are expected to continue in the coming years."
