Help Stamp Out Hunger! |

Saturday, May 14
is the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Marshall and area residents can leave non-perishable, non-breakable food items by their mailbox and Letter Carriers will collect these donated items as they make their rounds that day. Rural route carriers will assist in the collection effort, also.
United Way volunteers will transport the food items to the Kitchen Table Food Shelf operated by Western Community Action. The need for services and food items continues to increase. The Letter Carrier food drive is an excellent way to help increase the supply of food for the summer months when more food is needed because children are at home and not able to have school lunches. Please purchase a few extra grocery items this week and leave them at the mail box.

Recognizing Steve Schmidt |
Steve Schmidt, Ghent, who as a letter carrier touched the lives of people every day. From 1994 until his battle with cancer led to his death in October 2010, Steve delivered mail in the downtown Marshall Business district. Prior to that he was an associate Rural Carrier serving the Westwood Acres and Lynd rural route. Everyone along his daily route can tell stories of his dependability, his accuracy and his super friendly attitude. He is missed.

For a number of years Steve, as local representative of the National Association of Letter Carriers, headed up the annual 'Stamp out Hunger' Letter Carriers Food Drive. Through this effort Steve partnered with United Way of Southwest Minnesota to build awareness and to increase volunteerism connected with the food drive.
Annually, local letter carriers collect donated food along their route on the second Saturday in May. Steve was the driving force to initiate this effort in this area and over the years he and his fellow letter carriers, including rural carriers, have collected nearly 24,000 pounds of food. Through the local food shelf this food has helped feed hungry children and families in this area.
