Sorting Shrink Wrap
Preparing used shrink wrap for recycling provides employment opportunities.
Greetings!
Mountains of shrink wrap will be headed to a recycling center rather than going into a landfill because of the industrious work of Canby Development Achievement Center (DAC) clients.  A United Way of Southwest Minnesota venture grant helped purchase some major equipment needed to bale the plastic wrap after it is collected from area manufacturing and wholesaling industries and prepared by the workers (see photo above).  This is a rewarding and innovative employment opportunity for a number of people.  THANK YOU for your support that helps make work like this possible!
If you find that your string of Christmas Lights no longer works please don't throw it away --- the Canby DAC workers will prepare it for recycling.  United Way of Southwest Minnesota will see that it gets to Canby if you drop it off at our office in Marshall.
Project Community Connect A Success

A one-day event on October 25 had a goal of connecting people in the area with services and information.  Those who attended had an opportunity for free haircuts, blood pressure checks, flu shots, information about employment services and how to get help with their heating costs, hand-knitted baby sweaters, quilts, a hot meal and much more.  Over 40 service providers helped make this event possible.

Project Community Connect Planners

United Way of Southwest Minnesota awarded a grant to help underwrite Project Community Connect and touched the lives of more than 350 people who live in this area.

You can do good while shopping at Wear It's At

Advance Opportunities (formerly Lyon County DAC) has an exciting retail shop Wear It's At located at 1217 E College Dr, Marshall that features gently used name brand clothing of all sizes (including boys and men).  This shop creates viable employment opportunities for a number of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in the Marshall area.

Wear It's At venture grant

A venture grant from United Way of Southwest Minnesota has helped to more effectively market the clothing store.  You can see the new awning in this photo.  A new sign is located along the street, also.

Coping with Loneliness

The Granite FallSenior Advocacy VGs Senior Advocacy Program received a United Way of Southwest Minnesota venture grant to conduct educational sessions to help deal with grief, loneliness, depression, cooking for one, self-care and other topics of interest at its new support group for widows/widowers in their community.
