An Investment in Our Future

Concern about the long-term effects of children coming to school unprepared to learn led United Way of Southwest Minnesota to begin local sponsorship of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program.

Research shows that reading out loud regularly to young children makes a big difference in a child's brain development and vocabulary.  This all adds up to children who are better prepared for success when they enter school.

244 pre-school children living in this area received their very first book "The Little Engine That Could" in October 2005.  Since then 5,214 children have received 127,402 quality books in the mail each month at no cost to their families.  This is an investment in our future of $318,505 that United Way of Southwest Minnesota donors have underwritten over these past five years. The average cost per book is $2.50.

There are currently 2,386 children, ages birth - 5 years old, enrolled in Imagination Library.  Click here to learn more and find out how to register a child who lives in this area.
