Taking a stand against bullying |
A recent United Way grant helped House of Hope Minnesota conduct Camp Ophelia (week long camp) for girls in grades 4-6. Hopefully this will lead to an ongoing after school Club Ophelia program in schools. The purpose of the camp and the after school program is to help young girls deal with relational aggressions and give them skills to prevent them from becoming victims of abuse. Relational aggression and cyberbullying have been identified as a growing problem in the schools. Girl Scouts Swim Team builds girls of courage, confidence, character United Way supports Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys each year as the Girl Scouts deliver leadership programming that builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
For girls in Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Yellow Medicine, and Redwood counties, one way to experience Girl Scouts is by diving into the water to compete in the Girl Scouts Swim Team program. With the help of parents, community volunteers, and area donors, the program serves more than 500 girls in communities throughout southern Minnesota.
The swim team season runs June 20 to August 1. Most teams practice two times and have one meet each week during the summer season. Through the support of United Way of Southwest Minnesota and community members, the Girl Scouts Swim Team program has continued to provide a healthy summer activity for more than 14 years. Girls learn the value of personal improvement, perseverance, and achieving goals through their participation. Girls going into grades 1-12 can participate. Adult volunteers also are needed at each meet. Parents and other adults interested in volunteering their time can contact the local team coaches.
