What will people do with their tax refund? |
When surveyed, the number one thing that people who took part in the Free Tax Clinic said they were going to do with their refund was to pay bills.
The number two thing is to put refunds into saving accounts.
For the third year, low to moderate income taxpayers were able to take part in the free tax preparation services that were coordinated by Western Community Action. This year the Marshall site served 536 taxpayers and assisted them in receiving $741,951 in tax refunds. This is an increase over either of the other two years.
United Way of Southwest Minnesota grants have helped underwrite this program for all three years.

Thank you |
Thank you to everyone who donated food for the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 9. The Marshall letter carriers, assisted by rural carriers, collected 3840 pounds of food items along their mail delivery routes along with $180 in contributions. This is about 1000 more pounds of food than was collected last year.

Addressing cyberbullying and relational aggression
|
House of Hope Minnesota is setting up two Camp Ophelias which are week long camps in Tracy and Marshall for girls in grades 4-6. This will be the beginning of ongoing afterschool Club Ophelia programs in the schools this fall. The purpose of the camps is to help young girls deal with relational aggressions and prevent them from being victims of abuse.
United Way of Southwest Minnesota recently awarded a venture grant to help underwrite the camps that will occur in June.
