Spotlight on Our Teen Volunteers

June 2011

Dear Friends,

Every time I walk into a classroom and witness the trusting bond that's been developed between a student and one of our amazing teens, I appreciate anew the powerful impact of Gateways' Teen Volunteer Program.

Whether it's one of the teens who get up early on Sunday mornings to help out at the Gateways Sunday Program or one of those we train to be a special needs aide in their own congregation's supplemental school through the Gateways Teen Madrichim Training Program, each of these 150 Boston-area teens creates friendships and memories destined to last a lifetime. And from what they and their parents tell us, they also develop a new level of confidence as well as leadership and interpersonal skills.

Recently, we were able to honor and thank these wonderful young people at an end-of-year event made possible by the Blanche and Lionel Goldman Volunteer Recognition Program. The experiences they shared were profoundly moving to me, my staff and the families and supporters who gathered in Hebrew College's Berenson Hall that evening.

Here at Gateways we've had a remarkable year filled with growth, gratification and gratitude. Did you know that this year, Gateways is:

  • Enabling more children than ever before - 172 in all - to succeed in our Boston-area Jewish day schools.
  • Bringing 60 children together each Sunday for a Jewish education that's right for them.
  • Providing opportunities for social action - and a social life - for the young adults in Mitzvah Mensches, our teen youth group for those with special needs.
  • Preparing the students with disabilities enrolled in our differentiated bar/bat mitzvah class for this powerful Jewish rite of passage.
  • Reaching hundreds of educators in our Jewish day schools, congregational and community schools and Jewish preschools with professional development, collaboration and strategies to help them make their classrooms more welcoming to all kinds of learners.

Each of the above represents countless children who are now being welcomed as full participants in the Jewish community and the Jewish people.

On their behalf I thank you for your confidence in - and support of - the Gateways vision, and wish you a delightful summer....

Voices at the Gates: A Tale of Two Teens

Each month, we introduce you to another "Voice at the Gate," someone whose life has been changed by Gateways' innovative programs and services. These include children with special needs in multiple Jewish learning settings across the community, their families, educators and teen volunteers.

On Sunday mornings Bronwen Stern can be found in the first grade classroom at her home congregation, Temple Isaiah in Lexington. As one of 85 area teens Gateways' Madrichim Program trained this year to be an aide (madricha) in their congregational religious school, Bronwen is making a difference.

That's because these teens are filling a critical need: working with students with diverse needs, and helping them successfully integrate into the classroom.

Bronwen, a Lexington High School junior, says she was inspired to join the Madrichim Program because she enjoys "being able to see the progress that each kid makes throughout the year." Bronwen takes special satisfaction in helping students who struggle with the Hebrew letters because she had a tough time with them too. In addition, she says, she enjoys the ongoing challenge of "creating different ways to explain the lesson they're learning and helping them gain confidence."

Isaiah's Special Needs Coordinator Rebecca Winters reports that she is appreciative of the entire Madrichim team and that Bronwen -- known for "her consistency, patience and willingness to help out -- is a valued member of the classroom community."

Joe Step addressed the audience at the recent Teen Volunteer Appreciation Event, sharing many of his emotions as he "graduates" after three years in Gateways' Teen Volunteer program, and speaking in many ways on behalf of his --- fellow Sunday morning teen volunteers.

"Gateways has been a highlight of my week throughout nearly all of high school, both with Mitzvah Mensches and Sunday morning sessions," he said. "I had no idea how much of an impact this program would have on me as a person."  Not only did he develop strong bonds with the students he was paired with, but Joe says he also was enriched by another aspect of the program - "the network of teenagers with whom I could discuss the work we were doing, both the ups and the downs." He also gave kudos to "the amazing Shana [Belenky]," the classroom teacher he's worked with for the last three years. "Entering a classroom in which I knew and was friends with the teacher gave me a greater amount of confidence and sense of comfort, which carried over into my work in the classroom."

Joe also became an integral part of the team preparing his most recent student for his bar mitzvah -- studying prayers and learning his Torah portion. Every Sunday morning the two would settle into bean bag chairs in the corner, and run through a nearly full Shacharit service, "every week cleaner and smoother, giving both of us a sense of accomplishment and a greater connection to Judaism," he says.

Mutual Appreciation: Event Honors Berkowitz, Gateways Teen Volunteers

Last Monday's Gateways Teen Volunteer Appreciation Event at Hebrew College filled the teens with ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream ... and the thanks of a grateful community.

But to eavesdrop on the teens' conversations buzzing around the room, it seems as if the gratitude was largely on the other side.

"Gateways really does create a warm environment with comfortable classrooms."

"It's the teachers who treat everyone warmly and help us be really useful."

"As volunteers, we just always felt appreciated - by the teachers, the parents and the kids."

"Did you notice the music always kept everyone involved?"

"The teachers were great role models for us," said first-year Gateways teen volunteer Jaclyn Gordon of Needham. "I was assigned a girl with (cerebral palsy) and I really didn't know what to expect. But by October I could tell we were building a good relationship. I'd see her face light up when I walked in and towards the middle of the year I felt a confidence I didn't have before, especially when her mother asked me to babysit! It's also definitely interested me in something I might want to do in the future."

"I'm amazed at what she accomplished and the confidence she developed," added her mom Beth Gordon. "I don't know if I would have done such a good job."

But by the time the last lick of ice cream was consumed, the formal presentations began, and the first order of business was honoring Margie Berkowitz, outgoing Director of Prozdor Hebrew High School, a program of Hebrew College that each year attracts more than 650 young adults from across Jewish Boston.

Stepping forward to accept her gift, Berkowitz recalled the fateful day nine years ago, when she and Gateways (then Etgar L'Noar) Executive Director Arlene Remz sat on a couch in Berkowitz's office and brainstormed a new concept: What if Prozdor students were able to get credit for training and volunteering at Gateways' Sunday morning Jewish Education Program for children with special needs?

In the years since, more than 350 teenagers have volunteered for Gateways, proving invaluable as role models, teachers and cheerleaders, encouraging students with a range of disabilities every step of the way.
