July/2012

Happy summer CIHS community!

Dear CIHS Community Members,

I hope everyone is enjoying summer. We have couple of articles in our July newsletter. First, one of our students, Sue Hannibal, master healer for over 25 years, writes about why she chose to enroll in CIHS, even though she is successful in her practice and as a published author.

Additionally, Dr. Hope Umansky writes about the new summer quarter and our annual Subtle Energy Science Conference, Subtle Energy Science: Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing, scheduled July 20-22. This is an invaluable occasion to learn and experience bio-energy science and hear about the most recent research by prominent speakers, Drs. Claude Swanson, Beverly Rubik, and William Tiller, among many others. For those people who are planning to attend the conference, please register as soon as possible (register online). Your mind and body will be fed the entire weekend, and it is a wonderful community event. If you have any questions about the conference, our programs, or CIHS in general, please contact Dr. Umansky ( Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu). Seating is limited so please reserve your spot today.

I hope you enjoy our newsletter. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at Hideki_Baba@cihs.edu

Please do not forget to "like" us in our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/cihs.edu).

Sincerely,

Hideki Baba, Ph.D.

Message from the Dean:

Dear CIHS Community,

"Long ago people thought matter was Earth's 4 elements: fire, wind, water, and ice. But now people know matter is what everything is made up of." I found this handwritten by my Molly, my 9-year-old daughter, on a piece of scratch paper. Just one of her every day innocent thoughts about how the world works. As a child, we inherently know we are complex beings whose essence is more than what we see. When do we lose that ability to be conscious of our connection outside of ourselves? Is our spirituality inherent until we are conditioned through society and traditional education to only see the material? Dr. Motoyama founded CIHS as a vehicle to transform education by integrating subtle energy science, spirituality, and academic study. Now more than ever, CIHS is on the cusp of what everyone perhaps knew naturally, and society is rediscovering that everything is made up of energy as a necessary shift for change and wholeness. And, we mean everything!

From my vantage point, meeting with prospective students each week and being out in the community preparing for our annual conference, Subtle Energy Science: Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing, July 20-22, people are yearning to take the leap into serious academic study and the transformative experience of subtle energy studies. I see it everyday. People are hungry to study and experience the shift in consciousness. They want to enroll in CIHS to have the opportunity to study on the cutting edge of academics, spirituality, and subtle energy studies. CIHS' mission is integration, and we are dedicated to support you professionally, educationally, and personally.

The summer quarter began this month, and we welcomed more new students this quarter than we have in 10 years. I love having the new energy in our student body, and the seriousness, ability, and talent our students bring to their studies constantly impresses me. They are all committed to being part of this shift by academically grounding themselves in the discipline of their profession. They embrace the path to earn academic graduate degrees that support consciousness and the mind, body, spirit connection. Being a maverick in your profession and the world takes courage, creativity, and fortitude. Everyone in the community is an iconoclast in their one way.

CIHS offers the opportunity for you to be a part of the consciousness frontier where science and spirituality meet. We welcome you to become a part of our community by immersing yourself in our most exciting event of the year. Our Annual Conference, Subtle Energy Science: Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing, July 20-22, on our beautiful campus in Encinitas, California. We have limited space and are filing up quickly with active members of our community and students. Intentionally, we created a conference that is open to everyone invested in the subtle energy community, whether leading researchers like Drs. Bill Tiller, Beverly Rubik, and Claude Swanson, to leading energy psychologists in the field to medical professionals to gifted healing practitioners, far too many and esteemed to mention them all here (for a full program schedule please click here). In the past, the conference has focused on research and science. This year, we broadened the scope to include research, science, practice, and experiential components to welcome the entire subtle energy and consciousness community to CIHS. We are all about integration, and the conference reflects this mission. Each presentation will be theoretically grounded and have an experiential component. The conference begins Friday night with dinner, a meet-and-greet, and two presentations, including a guided meditation. Saturday and Sunday will be two full days of presentations, food, and community experience. CIHS will feed your mind, body, and soul throughout the weekend. We welcome all like-minded individuals to come and be supported in this cultural shift toward consciousness (conference program).

To what lengths are you willing to go to be part of this new age? Are you willing to take the chance to immerse yourself in the experience and academic study of subtle energy, consciousness, and psychology, comparative religion and philosophy, and/or the healing arts? I am more than happy to meet with you to discuss how CIHS can support you professionally and educationally, whether as a student or active community member (Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu). If you are not sure what we are all about, please take the leap and experience the warmth of a community committed to the mind, body, spirit connection by attending the July conference. It is a fabulous way to experience our vibrant community of scholars, scientists, students, researchers, and practitioners. We welcome you to join us!

Hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Hope Umansky, PhD

The Credibility Factor: Grounding Consciousness
with Advanced Education

by Sue Hannibal, Medical Intuitive Healer
and CIHS Student

After 13 years of private practice and continuous training in trauma, I was approaching burnout and I knew it. The clients finding their way to my office were needier, their cases more complex and energetically intense, or at least it seemed that way to me. In reality, a colleague gently pointed out, the clients weren't more intense; I was so close to running on empty that I lacked the resilience to bounce back after a weekend off. I'd made a classic mistake rookie therapists are cautioned about-my desire to help overcame the necessity to stay grounded, in balance and take care of myself so that I could continue to help.

Licensed professionals in many fields are required to take continuing education classes so they stay current with changes in laws as well as advances in their fields. The necessity to not only ground and expand my practice but also to have credibility that the conventional world demands when my second book is published brought me back to school at age 58.

We're a society enamored by professional credentials: MD, Ph.D,. LCSW, RN all are supposed to guarantee safety and professional quality. Authors get to share the same stage when they publish a book. They are automatically awarded the title of "expert" the way the Wizard of Oz awarded the lion his courage. But what really sets the bar for expert status? It's being grounded in the work and backed by the education so you can hold your own in a fast-paced professional world.

Ancient paradigms automatically bestowed credibility, respect and leadership authority on tribal elders, medicine men and women, shamans and high priests. Today, most people believe that if someone has letters after their name, they must be safe to trust, competent and an "expert." We also tend to ascribe expert status and credibility to authors, especially those graced with hardcover books from a prestigious NY publisher.

The truth is, neither is an automatic seal of approval. What makes the difference is that grounded education is more dynamic than just learning new information. It takes one's career to multi-faceted and deeper levels of competence because of study and skill development is integrated under the guidance and leadership of teachers who are also practicing professionals. It firms up a foundation of training and experience that allows one to reach higher levels of professional competence and range than experience alone. That's why I chose the academic environment at CIHS. It supports expansion of consciousness and energetic integrity as well as grounded professional development.

Sue HannibalSue Hannibal is a practicing medical intuitive, author and healer specializing in trauma and combat stress in Vista, CA.
