Registration week is June 11 to 15. You must register during this week to receive the discounted rate per unit. After this week, tuition is at the regular rate.
We are also excited to introduce our new Integral Sciences Consultant at CIHS. Dr. Thomas Brophy will coordinate Integral Sciences related programs, and he will teach "Basic Notions of Biophysics" on campus this Summer. Dr. Brophy has been important to the school's development over the last fifteen years, and we are thrilled to welcome him back. Dr. Brophy introduces himself in this newsletter, so please review it. If you are interested in the program or courses in subtle energy studies, you can reach him at Thomas_Brophy@cihs.edu.
Also, Dr. Thorton Streeter announces our annual Subtle Energy Science Conference: Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing. Again, this conference is an invaluable opportunity to learn, explore, and experience subtle energy science and practice. If you register before July 1, there is a special rate of $395. It will be an immersion weekend at CIHS that begins with Friday dinner and speakers, as well as breakfast and lunch, Saturday and Sunday. The conference will present the most recent research by prominent speakers such as Drs. William Tiller, Claude Swanson, Beverly Rubik, to name just a few. All presentations will have an experiential component. (Please view the entire program schedule from here.
Lastly, Dr. Misha Goussev introduces his new book, recently released from CIHS Press. Dr. Goussev is a CIHS alumnus and CIHS adjunct faculty. His book, "Anatomy of Change" is based on his CIHS dissertation and presents research on the practical applications of the I Ching. I believe that this book provides great insights for readers to understand the wisdom of I Ching and apply it to our daily activities in business world, and personal as well as professional relationship. Dr. Goussev will also be presenting on this same topic at the July conference.

Message from the Dean:

Dear CIHS Community, Are you up for the challenge? Lately, I have found myself asking CIHS prospective students that question. Each week, I meet with prospective students who are all remarkable in their own way. Some come from Ivy League schools with stellar academic records; some are already professionals, healing arts practitioners, and psychotherapists who want to establish their practice in further study. Some individuals desire to take their personal development and spiritual education further by learning about the discipline of their field. They all come to CIHS with the hopes of studying a curriculum that is on the frontier in consciousness-based education. They are attracted to CIHS because our curriculum is based entirely on a mind-body-spirit paradigm that is grounded in academic rigor. Although CIHS' curriculum is on the cutting edge of education, we have been strongly established as a graduate school that is proudly celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall. In particular, the CIHS student has a unique opportunity to earn Master's and Doctorate degrees (BA completion, too) while working on the absolute frontier in the healing arts, psychology, integral health, comparative religion and philosophy, and subtle energy studies. In clinical psychology, the CIHS student has the opportunity to earn a licensure track degree that emphasizes holistic thought and a mind-body-spirit paradigm, a world away from the emphasis on the medical model. In comparative religion and philosophy, the CIHS student has the opportunity to pursue this discipline from a non-western, non-Judeo Christian perspective. Additionally, Integral Health, an interdisciplinary degree, provides students the opportunity to concentrate in subtle energy studies by designing a program that draws from the strengths of CIHS' comprehensive curriculum. Despite the many educational opportunities available, the question, are you up for the challenge, is real because CIHS is in its own niche as a graduate school. Being a maverick has its risks. All people on the frontier of cultural changes in consciousness will tell you that it takes courage to take a risk on a non-traditional school. Hence, I find myself asking the CIHS prospective students if they are up for the challenge in pursuing an out-of-the-box graduate education. For CIHS students already enrolled, I commend you on accepting the challenge. An educated world is a better world, and CIHS' mission is to educate students in this new paradigm to help transform healthcare, psychology, research, subtle energy studies, and academics, to name just a few of the impacted areas. You are all mavericks and contributors to ushering in a better, more conscious age. We feel privileged to help educate you along the way. CIHS welcomes all like-minded people to experience the larger CIHS community at the Summer annual conference, July 20-22, Subtle Energy Science: Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing. We will explore the heart and science of subtle energy studies, science, practice, research, and the practical application of studying the human biofield. CIHS' conference will examine the theoretical basis and provide practical application of its many uses on the frontier of healing, research, and science through experiential and research based presentations. Throughout the weekend, you will have the opportunity to play, apply, and study with the tools and theories presented. The Summer Annual Conference also coincides with CIHS' 20th anniversary. Please come and join us in experiencing the excitement of being steeped in the new paradigm of change. There is a special rate until July 1. CIHS students receive 20% off the pre-registration rate (unless taking it for credit). https://www.cihs.edu/index.php/events/ Along those same lines, we are happy to announce the Summer 2012 course schedule. If you have any questions about your course program and/or would like an appointment to either see me in person or speak by telephone, please contact me: Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu Summer 2012, Course Schedule, Registration week June 11-15 (special rate). Topic of Special Interest: Life Force, Dr. Claude Swanson, elective all programs; open to non-student members of the CIHS community, upon approval by the Dean. If you are curious about how CIHS can support you on your professional and educational goals, please feel free to call, email, or, even better, set up an appointment with me. There are many ways to be involved with the CIHS community, in addition to enrolling in one of our innovative graduate degree programs. CIHS offers a BA completion program as well. I welcome all like-minded individuals to look at how our niche graduate school can support you on the path professionally, educationally, and personally. Join us for this Summer's Annual Conference (July 20-22) and as we pursue academic degrees that honor the whole person. Hope to see you on campus. Happy Summer! Sincerely, Hope Umansky, PhD Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu |
New Integral Sciences Consultant at CIHS | |
by Thomas G. Brophy
Central to the mission of CIHS is an Integral vision, that human reality consists fundamentally of physical-material aspect and spiritual (or consciousness) aspect, both - neither reducible to the other. Modern academia has tended to segregate disciplines into the "physical sciences" such as physics and chemistry and the "humanities" such as philosophy, religious studies, and the arts. After the European Renaissance great successes of the physical sciences eventually led to a modern academic hegemony and dissociative mentality, a belief that physical-material studies are the only "valid" academic pursuits, to such an extent that fields such as biology and even psychology at times try to re-define themselves as physical sciences. The Integrative mission of CIHS as an academic institution is to re-unite the study of the fundamental aspects of Human-being in totality, as a newly Integral 21st century vision. It is the role of the Integral Sciences Consultant to leverage the best of modern physical science training and research toward the realization of this new post-modern revisioning at CIHS.
The movement toward an Integral vision, importantly, must be an advance to a higher stage of collective awareness that includes the magnificent advances of physical science, while transcending its disslocations. This Integral vision is thus not a regression to pre-differentiated modes of the past that suffered from dogmatic "infallible" myths of some particular metaphysical given. In research, integrity of quantity and measure - the Platonic "true" - must be rigorously maintained. For, combined with two more fundamental aspects - the Individual and the Social (both fundamental, neither reducible to the other) - the Integral vision also maps into the three great value spheres described by Plato: the True, the Good, and the Beautiful which informed the modern academic divisions: Sciences, Humanities, and Arts. That initially healthy differentiation of Renaissance-Modernity has fallen into an unhealthy, barren, even nihilistic, philosophical materialism. It is the Integral mission of CIHS through research and academics to bring the great successes of scientific Modernity forward into a new re-Integration.
Given such a prologue, a story about a certain Zen master comes to mind. When asked what should one do after one has had a powerful satori experience, the Zen teacher replied, "chop wood and carry water..." Thus the tasks of the Integral Sciences Consultant at CIHS include the mundane: oversee laboratory facilities and consult on research programs, coordinate Integral Sciences related aspects of academic programs and special events, and teach one course per quarter. Those familiar with ancient CIHS history will remember that I had an administrative role around the turn of the millennium. Since that time, in addition to my other businesses and authoring books, I have regularly taught courses and occasionally consulted, such as for the organization of the Integral Health Studies program. I am continually impressed by the unique qualifications and self-determination of CIHS students. Because CIHS is a living evolving entity, I encourage all interested students and faculty to meet with me regarding the incorporation of this vision into your program, as well as offer your ideas for CIHS.

From the Center for Biofield Sciences
| | by Dr. Thornton Streeter
There is something brewing in healthcare. Firstly a realisation that the biochemical approach is limited and there is not a drug to cure every problem. There has also been a corresponding surge of interest in traditional healing methods which has given western scientists and clinicians a wider perspective on what constitutes 'good health'.
I have spent the last 20 years researching the human Biofield at the Centre for Biofield Sciences, and this effort has led our team to establish an atlas of disease states that is composed of a new way of charting an individual's health trajectory.
Discovering The California Institute for Human Science was a very important part of my journey. This Institute and its track record of subtle energy research complements that of our own and together we have been presenting a series of workshops to promote interest in the wider scientific community.
The July annual conference, Subtle Energy Science: art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing, is our fourth event. It takes place on the beautiful CIHS campus in Encinitas, California, July 20-22. We have gathered the world's leading pioners in subtle energy sciences including scientists, practitioners, psychologists, and leaders, whom I believe are spearheading the course to new practice of medicine.
My confidence in this assertion comes not from blind faith but in the advances in our understanding of the human body. This has been facilitated by a wider integration of science internationally that may have been conducted in a different culture or language but is now available to a wider audience and this is causing a revolution. In addition, technologies have been developed that are now sensitive enough to measure the parameters that make the human body a human being.
We now have solid evidence for a physical meridian system, the layers of the biofield, the chakra system, the acupuncture points, and importantly we understand how healing really works. Biophotonic emissions from living systems, especially during the act of healing, are now being measured which is proving an important interface between classical scientists and those from the new paradigm. CIHS has a Faraday cage and biophoton counter to measure these emissions. They also have a technology called Apparatus Meridian Imaging system which measures changes in resistance across acupuncture points and gives insight into meridian function. Additionally, CBS has Polycontrast Interference Photography which gives insight into the chakra system and Electro-Crystal Therapy which analyses the sound emanating from the chakras. CBS also utilises Electro-Photonic Imaging (formerly known as Gas Discharge Visualization) which analyses the photons emitted from the fingertips according to the Su Jok meridian system.
CIHS and CBS are important pioneers, and their coming together to host this program is an exciting new front for the practice, study, and science of subtle energy studies, transforming the field of medicine with sustainable solutions.

New Book from CIHS PRESS | | "Anatomy of Change" by Dr. Misha Goussev
Dear Friends, Classmates and Faculty,
I am excited to let you know that my first book 'Anatomy of Change - Millennia Old Model for Navigating Change and Uncertainty' was recently published by CIHS Press.
Even though the word 'change' is perhaps one of the most commonly used in our vocabulary, it's intriguing that to this date in the West we don't seem to have one unifying framework for helping us put a sense of structure around this illusive concept. The aspiration of the Anatomy of Change book is to help us fill this gap. The book is based on my CIHS dissertation studies and research on the practical applications of the ancient Chinese Classic of Change, or the I Ching.
Rooted in binary logic of Yin and Yang, at its core the I Ching is a universal model designed to represent the dynamics of change with mathematical precision. The enduring relevance of this work can be attributed to its ability to provide a balanced perspective in dealing with change and uncertainty by appealing to both the mythos and logos aspects of our consciousness.
The main goal of my book is to make the universal and powerful framework the I Ching offers assessable to a broad audience from all walks of life and professions. I invite you to explore how this model can help us think through the drivers of change in a particular situation and influence the desired outcome.
I hope you will find that reading this book is worth your precious time. While each person's experience working with this I Ching is unique, I can promise you that this will be one book you will never finish reading... because you just don't know what change has in stock for you tomorrow...
You can purchase the book directly from CIHS bookstore at a discount or via Amazon. Of course, I will very much appreciate if you could spread the word and leave your feedback.
Furthermore, I will be presenting the book at the CIHS conference taking place July 20-22, 2012 in Encinitas, CA.
Thank you,
Misha Goussev
