May/2012

Dear CIHS Community Members,

We can already smell summer here in Southern California, although we had some rainy days in last month. Our May newsletter has several articles. The first one is from Dr. Hope Umansky introducing our summer course schedule. The summer quarter will start July 2, and for CIHS students and audits who are interested in taking courses, the registration week for summer is June 11 through 15. During this week, there is a discount on our regular registration rate.

In the next article, Dr. Michelle Dexter, CIHS core faculty, details her three-course module that begins in the summer quarter on energy medicine/psychology. The first module will be on energy medicine and subtle energy studies. The second will be on the "new" energy psychology, and the third will be on the integration of energy medicine/energy psychology. It is a fantastic opportunity to train and learn with her. Students can opt to take one or all three of the courses, and it is open to non-student members of the community upon the Dean's approval. If all three modules are completed, a certificate of completion will be issued, along with academic credit for CIHS students.

Lastly, in the third article, I review our annual April yoga workshop with Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley.

Additionally, there are a couple announcements. First, we finalized the schedule of our annual Subtle Energy Science conference. We have a great lineup of speakers including Drs. William Tiller, Claude Swanson, Beverly Rubik, and more. All presentations will have an experiential component, and it will represent a wide range of speakers and disciplines. Please see the flyer from here.

We also have new Facebook page. Please visit our page and "like us" so that we can stay in touch to ensure you receive the most updated information about CIHS' academic and research activities. Please help CIHS expand its network to like-minded individuals and communities. We need your help to do so. Like us!

If you are interested in CIHS or have questions about any of our programs, please visit our website or directly contact Dr. Hope Umansky ([email protected]) for any assistance. If you are local and would like to visit our campus and discuss our exciting and unique graduate programs and research opportunities in person, we will be happy to schedule a time. We welcome all like-minded inquires.

Message from the Dean:

Dear CIHS Community,

May is here already, and summer is around the corner. It is unbelievable how fast time is moving! It is time to begin thinking about Summer quarter, which begins July 2. Registration week is June 11-15, when the special early registration discount applies. It is also time to begin registering for our Summer Subtle Energy Conference, Subtle Energy Science: the Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing, July 20-22 on campus. If you register before July 1, there is a substantial discount. CIHS has a new Facebook page to promote the conference. Please help support our beloved community by "liking us" here. Please take a look at the conference schedule posted in the newsletter and on the Facebook page. We are offering a broad range of speakers all of whom are presenting an experiential component with their presentation.

This summer, CIHS is offering the following courses: Part I of Dr. Michelle Dexter's 3-part module on energy medicine/psychology. If you complete all three modules, you will receive a "Certificate of Completion," in addition to academic credit. If you are a CIHS community member who is interested in taking Dr. Dexter's course (one or all), you may request permission from me to "audit" the class. Biophysics will be held on campus and taught by Dr. Thomas Brophy; Study of East/West: Philosophy and Ethics will be taught by Dr. Mali Burgess; Counseling and Communication (CIHS core course) will be taught by Dr. Roger Cavnaugh; and Family Violence & Child Abuse Assessment and Reporting (licensure track Psychology requirement) will be taught by licensed psychologist Dr. Sharon Mijares. Students are able to take the Summer Conference for academic credit (2 units) by enrolling as a Topic of Special Interest and writing a small paper under my direction at the end of it.

Along with the many evident positive changes at CIHS, we will be celebrating our 20th year in operation. We will be recognizing this distinction and CIHS' place in the consciousness community at the Summer conference and at graduation this year (September, 15, 2012). If you have been a part of the community in any way, we welcome you and any like-minded CIHS friends to join us marking this special time. Our community is continuing to grow in many ways.

As many of you know, Dr. Koji Tsuchiya unexpectedly had to move back to Japan to take care of his family. Although we were sad to lose a loyal member of the CIHS administration, we are thrilled to announce the administrative return of Dr. Thomas Brophy, who will serve as the Integral Sciences Consultant (assuming many of Dr. Tsuchiya's responsibilities) beginning June 1. Many of you already know Dr. Brophy as a well-known and liked instructor. In fact, he served in the role as Dean and he was my first instructor at CIHS teaching consciousness studies in 1998! Dr. Brophy will be teaching Biophysics on campus this summer. As of June 1, Dr. Brophy will be managing the academic aspects and student advisement of subtle energy studies, sciences, and Integral Health. We are thrilled to have him return to a leading role at CIHS.

If you have not already had a chance to see our newly renovated lecture hall by attending one of our workshops, you will be pleasantly surprised (amazed!) when you come on campus. The lecture hall carpet was replaced by a beautiful wood floor to make it a "green" space for lectures, meditation and yoga events, and any other of the many wonderful classes that utilize that space throughout the year. We also created a CIHS Resource Center next to the library so there is a place to do specific research with our specialized book collection and searches on campus. It can also be utilized as an additional small classroom.

Last but certainly not least, we are thrilled to report that CIHS had our first state inspection from California's newly energized Bureau, the government organization that regulates our sector, and CIHS passed with exemplary marks in all areas: academics, administrative, community, student and faculty life, among a few others. We thank you for making CIHS the exciting learning community that it is. We are here to support you in your pursuit of graduate studies that are based in consciousness and the body, mind, spirit paradigm or as a community member who regularly attends our workshops, lectures, and events. If you are interested in becoming a more active CIHS community member, either as a student, workshop attendee, or through research, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

I am more than happy to make time for you to discuss how CIHS can help you meet your goals for a consciousness-based graduate education (BA completion, too). I look forward to seeing you on campus as a student or at our Summer conference.

Have a wonderful Spring!

Sincerely,

Hope Umansky, PhD

by Dr. Michelle Dexter, Psy.D., NLPCC

A close friend of mine came to me recently after his older brother had, according to him, "stolen away his girlfriend." As he lamented about the situation, he kept saying, "I don't want to hate him, but I do. I don't want to be angry, but I am." I'm sure that you, like my friend, have had experiences in your life where you didn't want to feel angry, jealous, or depressed, but no matter how hard you tried not to feel that way, you just couldn't stop.   As much as we might like to reason ourselves out of negative emotions, neuropsychology teaches us that emotions are less controllable than we might like. The good news is that new advances in the fields of psychology and quantum physics have revealed ways to release these emotions-permanently.

The fields of Energy Psychology (EP) and Energy Medicine (EM) offer much promise for healing stuck emotions, fears that hold people back from achieving their goals, past traumas, limiting beliefs, and physical maladies. These relatively new fields emerged out of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ayurveda, quantum physics, quantum mechanics, cybernetics, systems theory, biofeedback, biology, psychotherapy, integral studies, and integrative psychology.

In short, Energy Psychology is a paradigm that holds that the painful issues that plague us in life are mind-body-spirit issues, wherein our energy needs to be restored to balance and order in order to create healing. In his book, Energy Psychology, 2nd edition, EP expert Fred Gallo explains "Assuming that thoughts exist in fields and that negative emotions are rooted in energy configurations, psychological phenomena are fundamentally quantum mechanical events or processes. They exist at low levels of inertia as compared to matter. Because energy is not highly inertially laden, if thought and psychological problems exist in energy-field form, then psychological problems can be resolved much more easily than one might assume.... It would then be merely a matter of altering or collapsing the energy field."

Energy Medicine tends to focus on restoring balance to energy systems in order to restore health and wellness to the body. While its focus is usually on healing physical symptoms, the vast majority of the time, during a healing session, emotional issues will surface that require energetic balancing too. Thus, EP and EM have quite a lot of overlap. For example, a client of mine recently complained of ankle pain during our first session. As it turned out, he was feeling quite a lot of anguish over not being able to spend more time with his children due to what he perceived to be a hopeless financial situation. I was not surprised, as the body often speaks to us in symbolic ways, and ankles often represent being able to move forward in life, which this man obviously did not feel that he could do. I am happy to report that when he left that EP/EM session, his ankle pain was nearly gone.

In any field, continued development is crucial to its continued success. The fields of psychology and medicine are no exception. Psychology has obviously come a long way since Freud birthed psychodynamic theory and modern psychology, and Ken Wilber, a contemporary expert in Integral Psychology, has gone so far as to say that psychology as we know it is dead (http://wilber.shambhala.com/html/books/psych_model/psych_model8.cfm/). In its place, what is emerging is an integral model that demands a holistic approach to solving problems-we must acknowledge and include all pieces that comprise an issue, including the internal (emotional and mental and spiritual), and the external (cultural and biological and systems of note).

Thomas Edison said "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease." What both of these ideas share is what EP and EM aspire to deliver: holistic healing that heals body, mind, and spirit, without the use of pharmaceutical drugs, in a way that is honoring to all parts of a being. Furthermore, these methods are gentle, and work with the body's natural systems to restore it to order and balance. Perhaps EP and EM are the very embodiments of Wilber's and Edison's predictions.

I have been practicing Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine in my private practice since 2004. My clients and I had been getting good results using the traditional "talking cure" and coaching methods I was using with them, but I realized that sometimes they got stuck. There were some issues where they never seemed to make progress. I wanted to offer my clients something more, and I was lucky enough to meet a woman in a coaching training class who introduced me to my first EP/EM method: Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT. I was thrilled that I could feel so much better after a few simple rounds of tapping on designated meridian points. Anger and resentments and other hurts that had plagued me for years could be mitigated or completely resolved in just a few minutes! I was delighted, and I was hooked on this new version of healing. I began adding EP/EM techniques into my practice as I learned them, and I've never looked back. Since then I have successfully treated clients for a myriad of emotional, spiritual, and physical issues. I have resolved clients' heartbonds (a condition where two people have an unhealthy energetic enmeshment that keeps them both miserable), transformed their limiting beliefs (such as "I can't achieve my goals") into affirming beliefs (such as "I can achieve the goals I set for myself"), released a great deal of their stuck negative emotions (such as fear, anguish, shame, and paralyzed will), and healed a great many physical maladies, including allergies, digestive issues, hormonal issues, and other aches and pains.

My success with these modalities inspired me to expand the graduate level teaching I've done on Energy Psychology, and I am pleased to announce that CIHS will be offering a series of three classes on these exciting topics beginning in the summer term. The classes will be open to undergraduate and graduate students and certain members of the CIHS community, per the Dean's discretion. The first class in the series will be The Art and Practice of Energy Medicine (summer term beginning July 2, 2012), followed by The Art and Practice of Energy Psychology (fall Term, September 2012). These courses will be followed by the capstone course, Advanced Practice: Energy Medicine and Energy Psychology (winter term, January 2013). Students can expect to learn about the origins of EP and EM, current research, myriad EP and EM methods, ethics of using EP and EM, and how to do some EP and EM techniques. Students who successfully complete all three courses will be awarded a certificate of completion.

I created these courses because I am sure that there are many of you who feel the way I do-that psychology is an ever evolving science, and that meaningful and transformative healing is achievable by utilizing this new generation of healing modalities. I am thrilled to be a new member of the CIHS community, and I look forward to sharing more about these exciting and transformative modalities with you in these courses. I hope to see you in class!

Annual Yoga Workshop Report - April 14 & 15, 2012
With Takeshima, Paul and Suzee Grilley

Yoga Workshop 2012-b

The yoga workshop with Mr. Takeshima and Paul & Suzee Grilley on April 14 & 15 was well received in our newly remodeled event hall. The wood floor was just installed a day before the workshop, and it is just a perfect atmosphere for the yoga workshop. This annual event was led by Takeshima, a disciple of Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama and an advanced meditation instructor from Japan. He introduced exercises and techniques to focus manipura chakra (third chakra). These included meridian exercises, breathing techniques, and meditation methods to focus on the chakra. This workshop was also supported by Paul and Suzee Grilley, who are also long time disciples ofYoga Workshop 2012-a Dr. Motoyama and well-known yoga instructors (yin yoga) as well as anatomy teachers. Together, with those experienced instructors, the workshop offered organized theories of the chakras and systematic practice in a peaceful atmosphere on a sunny southern California spring day.

The class started with meridian exercise. The meridian exercise is a series of physical exercises to mobilize the all joints in the body. Dr. Motoyama teaches that it is important to keep a healthy balance in the physical body through harmony with mind and spirit in order to attain spiritual development. The meridian exercise devised by Dr. Motoyama is designed to release stagnation of ki (prana) and lead the physical body to optimized balance. Especially during the course of long held immobilized meditation practice, ki energy will be stagnated in the joints, which results in discomfort in the body. Thus, it might be difficult for the practitioner to meditate longer. By learning and practicing this exercise method, the practitioner can regularize the flow of ki energy in the body and build a firm foundation for longer meditation practice, which leads to spiritual growth.

Yoga Workshop 2012-bAfter one hour and half meridian exercise instructed by Mr. Takeshima, Paul Grilley explained Dr. Motoyama's philosophy on spiritual evolution. Paul presented Dr. Motoyama's paradigm of our being in three levels and described them along with the theory of Purusha (pure consciousness) and Prakriti (phenomenal realm of matter), and in the relation to the nature of manipura chakra.

After lunch, Mr. Takeshima instructed on breathing techniques and meditation. Mr. Takeshima taught each technique precisely, as it is very important to learn systematically those techniques. Additionally, we spent some time on Q&A and closed the first day.

The second day was the review of the first day, and we practiced together under the guidance of Mr. Takeshima. We spent more time on meditation as well as Q & A in the end. After the Q&A, we together chanted the Heart Sutra (Prajāpāramitā Hdaya) for world peace and closed our 2-day annual workshop.

The workshop in the next year is for the fourth chakra, Anahata chakra, and it is tentatively scheduled on April 13 & 14, 2013. We hope to see you all in the next year. We really appreciate the support of those who came to the workshop. For those who were not able to come to the workshop this year, we hope to see you next year. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the CIHS community from yoga masters who are also Dr. Motoyama's disciples. If you have any questions, please contact me anytime at [email protected]
