February/2012

Dear CIHS Community Members,

Unbelievably, one month has already passed since we celebrated the New Year. In our February newsletter, we have great news and sad news. The good news is that we have new website. If you have not checked our website yet, please look our website (www.cihs.edu). The sad news is that Dr. Koji Tsuchiya will depart from CIHS by the middle of February to move back to Japan. The first article is from Dr. Koji Tsuchiya regarding his departure from CIHS. He reflects on his research at CIHS and his time here. He also reflects on future research at CIHS. The other article is from Dr. Hope Umansky regarding our very successful New Year's event and Open House on January 20.

In our upcoming March newsletter, we will be announcing the course schedule for the spring quarter, which starts March 12. We have interesting and timely courses planned so please stay in touch with us to ensure you receive the most updated information about CIHS' academic and research activities. If you are interested in CIHS or have questions about any of our programs, please visit our website (www.cihs.edu) or directly contact Dr. Hope Umansky (hope_umansky@cihs.edu) for any assistance. If you are local and would like to visit our campus and discuss our exciting and unique graduate programs and research opportunities in person, we will be happy to schedule a time. We welcome all like-minded inquires for graduate school, research, and/or workshop opportunities

Have a wonderful February.

Sincerely,

Hideki Baba, Ph.D.

Activities of Subtle Energy Research Center

Koji Tsuchiya, Ph.D.

Dean of Life Physics

Director of Subtle Energy Research Center

From my personal persepctive as CIHS Research Center Direcotr, I would like to reflect on my time at CIHS. More than six years of intensive laboratory study with substantial experimental facilities and collaborative team works at the CIHS has given me not only a rich research life but a sense of fulfillment on my own development, which led my inner space to be filled up with "subtle energy." I recognize that those wonderful experiences enable me to bring back to my spiritual journey as well, which has started since my childhood. When I was a young child, my groundmother took me to the forest in my town and said, "We are always living with God, which includes the nature and universe. God exists anywhere, anything, in anytime, in the forest and mountain and even in a rock and even within us." After that shocking comment at my childhood, my wandering and eventful journey began to unravel her spiritual message. Although my spiritual journey with scientific method is still going on the middle of the path, the CIHS research activities gifted me a lot of hints to solve a mystery of my groundmother's message. Her message uggested that scientific work cannot be implemented with neglect of experimental environments and conditions including not only physical influences like EMF but also an invisible energy flow among our human existence or consciousness in the filed possibly related to the nature as well as the universe, as explained by quantum mechanics.

Accordingly, these perspectives must raise an increased awareness in the future of mainstream functioning as an important role of the subtle energy and energy medicine research. Through daily academic activities based upon the above perspectives, I believe, that CIHS and its community, with our advanced scientific apparatus and technology, are becoming pioneers to attempt to integrate science into spirituality. Therefore, I am convinced that the CIHS Subtle Energy Research Center will contribute to the growth of the merging of science and spirituality in the 21st century

For the last several years, CIHS Subtle Energy Research Center has promoted the study and applications of human subtle energy through the research activities, publications, and papers submitted to the peer-review journals. In the summer, we also have held our annual conference, "Bio-energy devices and research," including leading scientists, practitioners, healers, gifted artists, and exhibitors. The invited speakers included Dr. William Tiller, Dr. Beverly Rubik, Dr. Claude Swanson, and Dr. Shin Lin, just to name a few.

In 1992 Dr. Motoyama established the Subtle Energy Research Center at the CIHS to elucidate the existence of the human being as a spiritual entity in multi-dimensional nature by rigorous scientific methods using both conventional and unconventional devices. In accordance with his instruction, substantial experimental researches have been conducted by AMI devices and other instruments including a bio-photon counter/analyzer and electrophysiological monitoring systems. The AMI is a proprietary electro-dermal measurement device developed by Dr. Motoyama. It provides distinct information regarding ki or chi energy reflecting conditions of the acupuncture meridian system and the status of autonomic nervous system of the subject. The AMI has been utilized as a fundamental device in our research to detect and characterize the effects of various healing modalities, including acupuncture, mediation, and non-touch energy healing techniques, etc.

By using the AMI measurement systems, three series of non-touch energy healing research have been done as one of our main research activities, which are categorized into a Case Study. In mainstream science and also in bio-energy research, there are two approaches: one is called Nomothetic; the other Ideographic. The Nomothetic is more like Evidence-based approach with the validity based on a large sample size and statistical analysis, which is widely accepted among scientists as "Gold-Standard." In our subtle energy research, a challenge we have encountered is that each subject often showed a different response even though they received the same healing under the same condition and the same experimental protocol. Through such peculiar cases, we have recognized that many uncontrollable factors may be involved in human subtle energy experiment. Each subject is unique and different in their mind and character as well as physical characteristic. Thus, each subject shows different sensitivity. Not only subjects but healers also show their uniqueness, such as the capacity of healing and expression of ability, which may be related to their innate talents. In addition, the conditions of their physical health are uncontrollable and different each time. In spite of these uncontrollable factors, we have found some particular meaningful results in the subtle energy researches. From this awareness, we have performed experiments by the Case Study, which is Ideographic approach. With this approach, we believe it is possible to study and elucidate how energetic changes take place in each process of the healing. Therefore, our approach is to conduct an individual experiment with a particular subject in non-touch energy healings. The following papers show how we have performed non-touch energy healing research and what we have gotten meaning findings.

Series of Study of Body's Energy Changes in Non-Touch Energy Healing:

No.1: Pranic Healing Protocol applied for a Breast Cancer Subject

     <Conclusions>

Ki-energy levels increased by 38% through the Pranic Healing.

Upper/Lower balance was shifted significantly from the lower body to the upper body that corroborates with the intention of Pranic Healing to the cancer patient.

Ki-energy balance pattern showed in the specific meridians through the sessions was consistent with the intention of Pranic Healing on the specific Chakras.

No.2:Reconnective Healing performed on a subject suffering from emaciated lower limbs

<Conclusions>

Energy imbalance found between upper and lower body before the healing sessions was normalized after the three sessions.

Although the average ki-energy remained unchanged throughout the healing trial, the subject's body energy became well-balanced.

AMI is a suitable instrument to detect the changes in the ki-energy conditions of the subject's meridian system.

No.3:Synchronous Changes in Qi-energy levels between Healer and Subject during Hypnotherapy Healing

<Conclusions>

Ki-energy of the healer and the subject changed synchronously with predominantly positive correlation in the healing sessions.

Negatively synchronous changes were also found concurrently with the positively correlated changes in some healer's/subject's meridian combinations.

These results strongly imply that synchronous ki-energy movement was taking place between the healer and subject during the Hypnotherapy Healing.

We believe our subtle energy research potentially provides deeper insights into the healing mechanism involved and can explore the research of true existence of human being. It has been my pleasure serving the CIHS community and wish it well as my time here ends.

Message from the Dean

Dear CIHS Community,

Change is inevitable. CIHS has seen many seasons of change in the last two years. On the one hand, we have the positive changes of an entirely renovated website more accurately reflecting our vision of CIHS' mission and place in the consciousness community: www.cihs.edu . The new CIHS website accurately reflects the innovative nature that the pursuit of graduate work at CIHS provides in this new era of shifting consciousness. Our graduate school provides a unique opportunity to earn graduate degrees that are specifically useful in the every day world, such as the MFT and PhD in Clinical Psychology to name just a few, with an innovative curriculum that supports consciousness and spirituality.

On the other hand, with each change there is a period of transition. Sadly, we are saying goodbye to Dr. Koji Tsuchiya this month. Dr. Tsuchiya has been an integral and loyal part of the Life Physics program and research center for six years. Dr. Tsuchiya spends some time sharing his reflections and significant contributions to CIHS and subtle energy studies.

CIHS is dedicated to ensuring that each transition can be an opportunity for growth, as one door closes a new area of growth emerges. CIHS is committed to remaining on the forefront of subtle energy studies (Life Physics) and research. We are committed to providing scientists, students, researchers, and practitioners, a place to investigate subtle energy science to advance the new age of empirically verifying its existence.

Additionally, I am happy to report that we had a very successful Open House with faculty, community members, workshop attendees, current, and prospective students. This year's Annual Holiday Party/Open House had the largest turnout of any prior Open House. Because of many requests to have more than one each year, we will be having another in the summer to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. Please stay in touch through our website, Facebook, or newsletter to make sure you are connected to all of our special events throughout the year.

A gentle reminder that March 16-18, Advanced Integrative Therapy is being offered at CIHS. Seating is limited so please take care of your registration. You can receive academic credit for this course. It is designed for psychology or mental health practitioners to provide an energy modality to help heal and process trauma. If you are interested in attending, please register through our website's registration page:

Lastly, please SAVE-the-DATE for our Annual BioEnergy Conference, Subtle Energy Science: Art & Practice of Consciousness and Healing, July 20-July 22. This year we will be combining the presentation of the science of subtle energy and consciousness with the practical application through experiential presentations. We will be announcing our speakers soon, and it is going to be a phenomenal event to help advance the conscious application of subtle energy in your academic, professional, and personal life.

Thank you for being a part an integral part of our community. We value each of our community members whether student, workshop attendee, researcher, or affiliate. If you would like to explore how CIHS can help support your educational, professional, and personal efforts toward growth and consciousness, I would be more than happy to set aside a time to meet with you. My door is always open (Hope_Umansky@cihs.edu).

Sincerely,

Hope Umansky, PhD

21 CEs available for MFTs, LCSWs, and Nurses

You are invited to experience an inter-active seminar about a transformative technique that will refresh your practice. If you want to give yourself or your clients the experience of being excited about their therapy, this is it! Advanced Integrative TherapyŽ (AIT) empowers the client to heal quickly in a collaborative relationship with you.

The three-day Basics seminar introduces accelerated in-depth work to address issues and disorders that often take a very long time or are difficult or impossible to treat fully and completely.  As you work with the client's present reactive patterns which are triggered by the past, you learn to extinguish them utilizing new energetic strategies.  These strategies take away the pain, the rage, the fear, and the grief, and the client feels free.

As therapists you will be able to:

  • Implement AIT into your practice immediately with ready-to-use, step-by-step protocols
  • Heal old wounds with new tools
  • Convert clients' self-sabotage into healthy beliefs and positive self-care
  • Achieve faster healing at deeper levels
  • Move your clients from surviving to thriving, quickly and effectively
  • Re-awaken your dream of psychotherapy as a healing art.

You will walk away with the following:

  • A 3-Step Transformational Model of therapy
  • The Covenant Matrix which transforms clients' deepest negative beliefs about their own healing
  • Methods for removing resistances permanently
  • Step-by-step protocols for transforming traumatic patterns and beliefs
  • Meditations that facilitate client healing

Here is what other San Diego Therapists are saying about AIT and the training:

"I employ other trauma therapies in my practice such as EMDR and Brainspotting, and I have clients who prefer the AIT after having tried the others. They have said they experience more of a release with it, so I am very happy that I have added it to my repertoire. It has been an invaluable training, and I highly recommend it to any therapist who works with trauma."

Mary L. Obata, MFT

"Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) is one of the two most useful therapeutic tools I have learned in my 25 years as a therapist (the other is EMDR).  The most valuable aspect of the AIT training for me was learning how to do muscle testing (MT) and how to use it effectively.   I use MT to guide every aspect of my treatment, including determining which problem to treat and when, and which method to use to treat it (AIT, EMDR or another treatment modality).  Since I have taken the AIT training, my practice has become completely fee-for-service, is always full, and is more fulfilling to me than ever."
