Goal of Future Research
- Medicine and Religion for Global Society -
Hiroshi Motoyama, Ph.D
.
1) Integration of Eastern and Western Medicine Based on the advancement of cellular and molecular medicine, modern medicine has successfully clarified the mechanisms of constituent cells of the living body at molecular levels, such as DNA. It has contributed immensely to the fields of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, enabling great advancement in medical treatment. Thanks to advanced medical care, abundant food, and comfortable housing, people's life span has extended to 80~90 years of age. However, dementia patients and people incapable of sustaining their own living have increased as well. I believe that the purpose of life is to live a life of service to other people and stay in good health until the last moment. For this purpose, it is important to study the human body concurrently with the material-based medicine of the body as a mass of matter, from the viewpoint that Prana or Ki-energy, as referred to in Yoga or Chinese Medicine, interacts with the Soul at the Chakras. This approach is essential to achieve the integration of the Eastern and Western medicine, as well as to develop the concrete and holistic understanding of the human body within the totality of the human constitution. Seventy percent of the mass of the living body is comprised of "body fluid." In the form of intracellular or extra cellular fluids, the body fluid flows through the connective tissues and the dermis. It carries all necessary constituents to the living body including various positive and negative ions, other inorganic substances, organic substances such as amino acids, hormones, and the like. Dermis is one of the important tissues where it is known that body liquid flows. As the result of years of research studying the electro-physiological aspects of the skin, the following facts have been revealed by electro-physiological experiments: 1) Electrical potential gradients of 100~150mV exist within the dermal layer. The direction of the potential gradient matches the direction of the Ki-energy flow, which has been empirically known in the 3000-year history of Chinese medicine. Namely, in the Yin meridian, Ki-energy flows from bottom to top, while in the Yang meridian, it flows from top to bottom. For Yin meridians, the electrical potential was found to be higher in lower parts of the body than in upper parts. This indicates that the direction of potential gradient is from the lower to the upper. For Yang meridians, the reverse was true. 2) Furthermore, when Yin-Yang pair meridians are in normal healthy relationship with each other, the dermal electric current (=BP), which is the parameter reflecting the Ki-energy level, is larger in the Yin meridian than in the Yang meridian. This finding provides electrophysiological evidence for the reality of the so-called Yin-Yang pair relationship, among the twelve primary meridians. 3) In contrast to this dermal electric current, after polarization current (=AP), which is the current that flows through the epidermis, and total polarization charge (=IQ), which is a parameter for immune function, does not always show the magnitude of the relationship between the Yin/Yang meridians. From these experimental findings, it was demonstrated that the meridians exist in dermal connective tissue, and additionally, the Ki-energy, or subtle energy, flows within the body fluid that fills the dermal connective tissue. In order to measure the electrical current that flows inside the dermal connective tissue, a transient current response to an externally applied rectangular voltage pulse is captured and analyzed. When the voltage pulse (height=3V, width=500µsec) is applied on the skin's surface, there is a large initial current that flows within the dermis electrically connected in series through the capacitance (C~ 6000pF) across the basal membrane that contains collagen fibers and the resistive components (R~ 2kW). When the capacitance is fully charged and a reverse potential across the basal membrane is formed, the current bypasses the dermis and flows through the epidermis. The dermal current decreases exponentially (~ e-t/t: t=time constant), and its initial part contains very high frequency components (~ 5MHz) as its rising edge is very sharp. This initial peak current is called BP, the current before polarization. This parameter BP is measured at the Sei-point, which reflects the functional conditions of the particular meridian to which it belongs. Each meridian is connected to specific internal organs. Thus, BP has been found to be the parameter that shows the functional state of the meridian and its related organs. AMI (Apparatus for Meridian Identification) is the instrument that is capable of measuring BP, AP, and IQ (=parameter of immune function), which is the total amount of electrical charge of the ions that form the reverse potential. With the AMI, it is possible to measure the functional conditions of the meridians and their related organs, as well as the state of the body fluid flowing throughout the body. The ionic polarization at the basal membrane occurs with the living body but not with the dead body. This fact may be used to check whether a person is "dead or alive." Thus, the AMI is a measuring instrument that can serve as the bridge between Eastern and Western medicine. Through the use of AMI, the integration of Eastern and Western medicine has become more feasible. It is my sincere wish that this line of research be taken over on a global scale and further developed by younger researchers. 2) Integration of Eastern and Western Religion The tribe born and living in a severe desert environment with no water cannot but expel other tribes or even exterminate them in order to protect themselves and survive. From such a living condition, antagonistic worldviews are born. Religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, among others, were born from this antagonistic world-view. God, Man, and Nature are in the state of antagonistic separation where it is impossible to become one with the other. In reality, however, Nature, Man, and even God are mutually inter-related and interact with each other. Nevertheless, logic is lacking as to how separate and antagonistic entities can interact with each other. Dialectic logic that shows how God creates and enables mutual relations is non-existent. In contrast to such desert conditions, the environment in Asia is diametrically opposite to this. There is abundant water to nourish plants and crops. In fact, people sow seeds, according to the seasonal cycle, rainy season, dry season, and they do weeding and other miscellaneous actions entrusting the power of Nature for crop growth. When fruit are ripe, it is harvested for food. People entrust their life to Nature there and believe it important to be in harmony with Nature. Here arises the worldview that Man, Nature, and God are originally one. Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, and other similar belief systems and/or religions, espouse the ultimate reality of Emptiness or Nothingness, which is beyond all that is. This is a significant characteristic of Asian religions. However, in these Asian religions, philosophical logic is lacking as to how matter and nature came into being; how human mind and soul emerged; and how mind or the soul of man are different from nature; in addition, it does not address what the principle of matter is. That is to say, in the context of Nagarjuna's "Emptiness is Form," the logical structure of this equality is unclear. Thus, Asian religion is overly biased to the attainment of Realization. Being so biased toward the mind, soul, Alaya consciousness and Purusha, it failed to grasp the essence of the material principle that exists in antagonistic isolation from the mind, Alaya consciousness, and Purusha. If logic, religion, and philosophy are successfully formulated based on religious experience in such a way that the Asian religion subsumes the desert religion that has been built upon conflicts, it will then be the global religion for all of humanity. Based upon my own mystical experiences and the study of various religions of the world, I presented the outline of this religious philosophy in my book "Logic of Being and Interactive Function." It is my earnest wish that this book be read by young practitioners and academics of various religions and that they strive to create a universal religion for the Global Society. It is also my wish that they will work for the realization of harmonious coexistence of Man and Nature, thus leading the people on Earth. July 7th, 2010

My experience in CIHS and My Hopes for the Future
Hideki Mori, M.D.,Ph.D., Tokyo, JapanI was admitted to CIHS in September 2006. I chose the online program working toward a PhD in Integral Health. I completed the dissertation entitled Frequency Analysis of Meridian System, under the guidance of Dr. Motoyama. I successfully passed the oral defense and obtained the Ph.D. degree in September 2010. I would like to share a brief summary of my dissertation and my vision for the future. The objective of my experimental research was to determine whether Ki- energy flowing through the meridian system has a frequency characteristic to each individual meridian. I worked closely under the supervision of Dr. Motoyama. In addition, our experiments were conducted with the help of Dr. T. Shoji, Mr. N. Takayama and many others at the Institute for Religious Psychology, Dr. Motoyama's research institute in Tokyo. For this investigation, I studied Time Series Analysis, Frequency Analysis, Digital Signal Processing, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, and Eastern Medicine. At the institute, I was allowed to use the custom-built electrometer, the custom designed silver needle electrodes, the AD converter, and the software for data processing and data analysis. In this study, I measured electrical potential difference between the two acupuncture points along the twelve primary meridians with special silver needle electrodes inserted into subject's dermal connective tissue, where the meridian is considered to lie, and analyzed the frequency spectrum of its time varying components. Fourier analysis of the original time series signals did not show any characteristic frequencies. However, following Dr. Motoyama's suggestion, when I analyzed the first order difference time series, clear peaks of characteristic frequencies were detected. I performed extensive statistical analysis of the peak frequencies and identified interesting features. My study demonstrated that the Ki-energy flowing through the meridian system has a frequency that is specific to each meridian. The average of thecharacteristic frequencies of the female Yang meridians was higher than those of the female Yin meridians, and it was also higher than those of the male Yang meridians. The higher the characteristic frequency of a meridian, the more easily the Ki-energy flowing in that meridian fluctuates; that is to say, such meridians are easily affected by the environmental conditions, such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, and humidity. Generally, women are generally more susceptible to the environment. They often experience poor health on the day before it rains, and some can even predict rain for the following day. In light of my study, such experiences appear to be understandable. The typical symptoms caused by environmental conditions are headache, waist pain, and stiff shoulders. Clinically, in the Gall Bladder and Bladder meridians, Ki-energy flow tends to stagnate in the case of headache and waist pain. In the case of stiff shoulders, which affect the Gall Bladder, Bladder, Large Intestine, and Triple Heater meridians, the Ki-energy flow tends to be stagnant. These meridians all belong to Yang group. Therefore, these clinical symptoms seem to be consistent with the findings of my study that the average characteristic frequencies of the female Yang meridians are higher than that of the female Ying meridians. Yang meridians pass through the face, but Yin meridians do not. Yang meridians pass through the outside of arms or legs while Yin meridians pass through the inside of the arms or legs. On the one hand, Yang meridians pass through the parts of the body that are more readily exposed to the environment. On the other hand, Yin meridians pass through the parts of the body that are less affected the environment. The differences found between the characteristic frequencies of the Yang meridians and those of the Yin meridians may be ascribable to the difference in the parts of the human body where meridian channels lie. In my position, I give medical consultation using both Eastern and Western medicine. In recent days, medical consultation using both western medicine and eastern medicine became common. Integral medicine or, in other words, medical practice performed by combining Western and alternative medicine, is also becoming popular. However, Eastern medicine regards the concept of general integral medicine completely different from Western medicine. In my opinion, this is because the Ki-energy, which is the basis of the Eastern medicine, has not been elucidated in basic medicine such as physiology, biochemistry, histology, and anatomy. Dr. Motoyama showed that the Ki-energy flows through the dermal connective tissue using the AMI (Apparatus for Meridian Identification) and other instruments. In fact, 20 years ago he hypothesized that a battery-like electromotive force formed between the hyaluronate's negative ions and the positive counter-ions (Na+) in dermal connective tissue was the source of Ki-energy. Since that time, he has continued his research to find supportive evidences for his hypothesis. If the mechanism by which the Ki-energy is generated, e.g., by the electrical potential between the hyaluronate's negative ions and the positive counter-ions (Na+) in dermal connective tissue, is elucidated in the same way that the mechanism of action potential is now, meridian systems can then be integrated into the study of basic medicine. This includes such subjects as anatomy, histology, physiology, and biochemistry. Western medicine and Eastern medicine will be integrated at the level of basic medicine, thereby ushering in the age of genuine integral health. When the function of the meridian system is made clear, as well as the correlation between the meridian system and physical systems such as the nervous system and endocrine system, medicine will advance to the new stage where Eastern and Western medicine are seamlessly interwoven. Ki-energy is expected to interact with the mind as well as with the nervous system and endocrine system. Therefore, the study of the meridian system should shed new light on the mechanisms of interaction between body and mind. In the distant future, it should also provide the evidence for the existence of the spirit. I believe that Dr. Motoyama's study of the meridian system will lay the foundation for the evolution of medicine and that the AMI will play an important role in this process. My experience at CIHS will remain as the foundation for my future work. I plan to use the AMI for my clinical work and research. Before closing, I wish to thank Dr. Motoyama for his supervision, guidance, education, and inspiration. I would also like to thank Dr. Tiller, Dr. Tani, Dr. Harada, and Dr. Brophy for their examination of my dissertation and their valuable advice. Furthermore, I would like to express my thanks to Dr. T. Shoji, Mr. N. Takayama, Mr. T. Kinoshita, Miss Kuratani, Miss Ito, the staff of IRP, the staff of CIHS, the staff of Inokashira Acupunture Clinic, and the volunteers for their cooperation.
