ISSSEEM 20th anniversary Conference
(International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine)
Koji Tsuchiya, Ph.D.
The ISSSEEM 20th anniversary Conference was held in Denver, CO, June 25th - 29th, 2010. I attended the Conference and presented a case study entitled "Reconective Healing" using AMI in the "Research Day." (The case study was reported at the CIHS workshop/ seminar held on July 10th & 11th.) It was surprising that I had an accidental meeting with Dr. Constance Wolfe and Dr. Steve Morris at the Conference. Both are CIHS graduates, who were in Ph.D. Integral Health program. At the Conference, Dr. Wolfe talked about her dream study in the "Member Choice" program, and Dr. Morris presented a study of heart synchronization on the "Research Day." As for my request to share a Conference experience, Dr. Wolfe provided special comments on her impressions and her dream work activity. I am delighted to show Dr. Wolfe's article here. I hope you enjoy reading it and receive helpful hints for pursing your studies.
THOUGHTS AND IMPRESSIONS FROM THE ISSSEEM CONFERENCE
Constance Wolfe, Ph.D.
I have been a member of ISSSEEM, International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine, for several years, but the 2010 conference was the first conference I had the opportunity to attend.
With the encouragement of Dr. Gaetan Chevalier, former professor at CIHS and the chairman of my dissertation committee, I submitted a proposal for a presentation of my dissertation premises in September 2009 and was very pleased that it was accepted. The theme of the 2010 Conference was Evidenced-Based Spirituality, and as a methodology for psychospiritual growth, my dissertation in dream study using the timing of Jupiter Cycles fit the category of this year's theme.
My proposal was accepted in the Member's Choice category, which was expanded this year and made available to the public. It allowed attendees to choose six short presentations, 15minutes in length, over the course of the afternoon. Those of us presenting, therefore, gave our talks three times in two different shifts all at one location. These presentations were informal with no technical equipment allowed, so I used a 3-sided display poster with astrological information, and I also had a handout of definitions as well as a summary of my dissertation.
As a new experience, I was nervous before starting, but because the groups were small and informal, there was much opportunity for exchange between the presenter and attendees. I was impressed and very pleased with the quantity and depth of the questions asked. People seemed to be quite intrigued with my ideas, and because of the eager acceptance, I plan on establishing a website for increased exposure to these ideas. I was quite pleased with the experience and am now ready for larger, more formal audiences. I feel passionate about my ideas regarding Fields of Information and the World of Symbolism and am eager to get them "out there".
Since I was a presenter, I could not get to any other Member's Choice Presentations, but from the program, it appeared to offer many different opportunities to hear examples of "Evidenced-Based Spirituality." I was impressed with the sincerity of the presenters close to me. In addition, making it free to the public was a valuable way to widen and disperse metaphysical ideas to the general public, opposite from "closed-door" strictly scientific meetings too technical for the general public.
In the evening, I attended a presentation by Doug De Vito and Anne Baldwin who gave information on their research comparing Reconnective Healing and Reiki. Their work was done with Gary Schwartz at the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Their premise is that in ordinary healing modalities, access to subtle energy must go through the "filter" of the healer, but in Re-connective Healing, there are no filters because access is directly connected to Fields of Healing, similar to my work (capitalization mine).
They used HRV and brainwaves for measurements, and I can envision a similar use of the AMI as a means of measurement. Most important was the shared idea of subtle energy fields for use in healing, whether measured in HRV and brainwaves in quantitative studies, or in more qualitative studies in dreamwork and astrology. The subtle energy fields are "out there" and always accessible.
Some of the keynote speakers were Charles Tart, President, Shinzen Young, and Edwin May on Saturday; and Beverly Rubik, Larry Dossey, and Carol Bowman on Sunday. Kate Hastings, the President-elect, also spoke about ISSSEEM Moving into the Future.
I could only attend the ISSSEEM Conference for one day because I had to leave for the IASD Conference (International Association for the Study of Dreams) in Asheville, NC where my proposal was also accepted for presentation. There were many other workshops and talks I wish I could have attended because the basic idea of "subtle energy" is so appropriate for students/graduates of CIHS. ISSSEEM is invaluable for anyone working into the area of consciousness studies, and I encourage those interested to consider membership.
The ISSSEEM conferences are usually in the Denver area, and I would be interested in joining with others in car travel and sharing expenses for the conference next year. Please contact me if you would like to attend. The study of subtle energy is an integral part of the philosophy of CIHS and courses taught, not to mention the research led by Dr. Tsuchiya.
Speaking of research, if anyone is interested in research using Moon Cycles and dreams, or possibly the AMI and astrology, please contact me, I invite anyone to join me in the various ways subtle energy can be applied in the art of healing.
Simply because ISSSEEM is all about subtle energy and the backbone of CIHS philosophy, it is a most valuable group for affiliation. CIHS helped me make the transition between what was "New Age" and the more legitimate, scientific area of Consciousness Studies and ISSSEEM is a natural partner for this.
