Announcement:
Change of Psychology Program Director & Dean of Academic Affairs

Toshiaki Harada, Ph.D.
Vice President of CIHS

After nearly eight long years of service, Dr. Elizabeth-Newby Fraser, Dean of Academic Affairs & Psychology Program Director, will retire as of the end of September. Dr. Hope Philips Umansky, her successor, will join CIHS from the 20th of September.

Dr. Newby-Fraser joined CIHS in February 2003 as Psychology Program Director. In addition to Psychology Program Director, from July 2003 CIHS asked her to concurrently play the role of Acting Dean of Academic Affairs.  From January 2004 she was given a full-fledged dual title of the Dean of Academic Affairs & Psychology Program Director, and she has ever since played a leading role in academic planning, execution of programs and negotiation with regulatory authorities as well as running the Psychology Program as head of the Psychology Department.  CIHS is very grateful for her dedicated service and important contributions to enhancing the quality of operation as a degree-granting graduate school.  We wish her a long life of happy retirement in good health.

Dr. Hope Phillips Umansky is thrilled to be joining the California Institute of Human Science. She has a diverse professional and educational background in psychology, language arts, and the humanities. She holds a Master's in Humanities from Reed College, with an emphasis in literature, specifically 20th Century American culture, and a Master's degree in General Psychology which she received from CIHS in 1998, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology which she awarded in 2002 from CIHS. Additionally, she has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Scripps College. Although Dr. Umansky's passion has always been in education and academia, she has extensive clinical experience as well. Currently, she is excited to join the administrative team at CIHS. As an alumna, she has a vested interested in the school's mission. She also holds an adjunct faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Phoenix San Diego campus where she teaches research, writing, and general psychology/sociology classes. She is passionate about being part of the CIHS community where integral and holistic psychology along with a traditional clinical psychology education is embraced. She is a young and energetic mother with one daughter, enthusiastic about coming back to CIHS to play this important role as Dr. Newby-Fraser's successor.  She sees this as an opportunity to be part of the paradigm shift in education and the practice of psychology. Dr. Umansky looks forward to working and guiding all of you.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Hope Phillips Umansky aboard CIHS.

Workshop Announcement

Dr. Motoyama is going to stay in California from September to beginning of October. One of his pinnacle events at CIHS during his stay is a lecture on October 2 & 3. The topic is "Difference and Interaction between Subtle Energy and Spiritual Energy" and you can view the brief outline from here. Please do not miss this rare opportunity to learn from a world-renowned spiritual leader on energy system that unites the body, mind and spirit and its relation to our karma. Spaces are rather limited.  We'd encourage you to register on line as early as possible.
From CIHS Press

We are pleased to announce the new release of Dr. Motoyama's Book "BUDDHA'S SATORI". In this book, Dr. Motoyama examines the nine stages of Buddha's "satori" or enlightenment based upon his own supreme religious experience. The publication of this book was made possible by Dr. Shigenori Nagatomo who translated and provided introduction as well as end notes from his professional and deep understanding of Buddhism. This book is now available from CIHS online books store for those who wish to develop deeper understanding of their meditation experience.

As for another book of Dr. Motoyama "TRUTH OF SPIRITUALITY" soon to be published, we are making progress as scheduled and we will publish it in October. We will keep you informed.

Report on the Workshop
with the Visiting Professors
from Tsukuba University

The workshop with the professors from Tsukuba University on August 28 was a very stimulating event. Dr. Hirofumi Tsushiro and Dr. Hidenori Sakuma are both from the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Science, Institute of Philosophy, the University of Tsukuba in Japan.

The presentation title of professor Tsushiro is "Some Reflection on the 'Spiritual': Focusing on 'Healing'". He presented an idea of applying what he called "Five Semantic Centers" to position various thoughts on "spirituality" focused on healing aspects.

Professor Samkuma gave a lecture on "Yoga-practitioner's Consciousness-only Theory: A Theoretical Approach from the Viewpoint of Neuro-science" and presented Consciousness Only school of Buddhism in relation to yoga (meditation) practitioners. And he explained that the world we experience is the world re-constructed by the functioning of our brain. Our eyes do not see, but our brain does. Therefore, we do not perceive the reality as it is. Our perception of the reality is conditioned by the process of conceptualization.  It was a inspiring presentation based upon both Buddhism and neuro-science.

The topics covered by these professors were much appreciated by the participants as they featured the aspects of spirituality freshly different from what western society popularly talks about. There were many discussions in Q&A session, which were also much appreciated as inspiring. We believe that the understanding of these themes is very important for all of us to usher in the "spiritual era".

We hope we will have more opportunities in future to organize similar intensive workshops with invited guests from Japan.  Please stay in touch with us.
