Dear Newsletter Readers,
I hope are you are doing well in this spring season. There are two announcements in this newsletter. One is that we cancelled the Karma & Reincarnation Workshop scheduled on May 16 & 17 with Drs. Hiroshi Motoyama and Sailaja P. Harada. This is because Dr. Motoyama's arrival in California is delayed due to his unexpected circumstances in Japan as well as concern about Swine (H1N1) flu breakout in San Diego area. However, a new edition of the Karma & Reincarnation book will be made available in the middle of May as scheduled.
At present, we still anticipate holding the workshop "Fundamentals of Spiritual Evolution" in June 20 and 21. Please check our website for update on future workshop schedule at CIHS.
Another announcement is that Dr. Motoyama's two new books are now available from CIHS: "Being and the Logic of Interactive Function" and "Motoyama Meridian Exercises for Ki Practice". Please visit our book store website for more information.
Best regards,

Prelude to Fundamentals of Spiritual Evolution Workshop |
Prelude to Fundamentals of Spiritual Evolution Workshop "A real Yogi in touch with the other world, capable of producing genuine psychical phenomena at will, is one of the rarest beings on earth." So wrote the Pandit Gopi Krishna in his memoir about the experience of kundalinī, which helped to introduce the phenomenon to the West. Hiroshi Motoyama, the founder of CIHS, is one of the rare beings to whom Gopi Krishna refers. It is not only his eight decades of concerted spiritual practice that impresses his students, but rather his profound degree of enlightened realization, which is apparent in his role as a spiritual teacher and counselor to thousands, a philosopher of mysticism, and even as a scientist, where he has channeled his unique abilities toward elucidating the physiological changes wrought by the experience of higher consciousness and melding Eastern and Western medical paradigms.
In this workshop, we will strive to elucidate the deeper aspects of Dr. Motoyama's spiritual philosophy. Although readers of this newsletter may be familiar with some of Dr. Motoyama's English books, the terms and concepts that Motoyama now uses to describe the world of spirit and the evolution to nirvana have only found their way into English translation in the last few years. As a close student of Dr. Motoyama since 2005, I have attended all of his public workshops since that time, and it has been my perception that the audience has often struggled to comprehend the full meaning of this philosophy, which Motoyama describes by borrowing the terms from the Sāṃkhya school of Hindu philosophy. It is my intention to make these terms and concepts as clear as possible to the audience, so that the attendees can understand and interpret Dr. Motoyama's profound teachings on their own.
The upcoming June workshop has its origins in Spring of 2006, when I traveled to Japan, along with Dr. Baba and some fellow students at CIHS, to practice meditation at Nebukawa retreat center and to receive teachings from Dr. Motoyama at Tamamitsu Jinja, the Shinto shrine where he serves as head priest. While there, Dr. Motoyama presented a series of lectures on the deeper meaning of spiritual practice that were remarkable for their clarity and depth of perspective. In these lectures, Motoyama situated the purpose of human existence and spiritual practice within the broader context of the cosmic purpose of the universe itself (which is something he has come to understand from his unity with God). In so doing, the lectures did not stop at providing pointers for yoga practice, but continued on to give profound insights into the nature of being, existence, and the meaning of life within our spiritual universe.
At the conclusion of the presentation, Dr. and Mrs. Motoyama asked me edit the lectures into a book, and we are working hard to have these published in time for the workshop. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible, and be sure to inform others as well. CIHS has lowered the price to only $40 for the weekend ($20 for students), so don't miss this unique opportunity to discuss the ultimate questions of life with this profoundly enlightened spiritual master!
