Featured Exercise - Special

Instead of one featured exercise I have put together a video that has several exercises.  It's not very specific as to how to do them.  It is more to show you, how, with a little creativity, exercise can happen anywhere.  Some of the exercises are more advanced.  I wanted to show some exercises for all ability levels.

The video is at the bottom of the Boot Camp page.

**As always consult your doctor before starting an exercise program.  This exercise may not be for you.  I share them to spread information, please be careful always while exercising.  Know your abilities and your limits.  If you have any questions please ask anytime.

Fat burn confusion Part 1 of 2

Will exercising before breakfast help me burn more fat?

I need to share with you some simple truths, so you can get the most out of your morning workout.  There is a school of thought that says if you exercise before you eat in the morning you will burn more fat.  This is not some fly-by-night rumor.  There are even well respected fitness professionals that subscribe to this belief.  What makes it so prevalent is that it's true...well at least in part.

This topic has been studied, not just anecdotally, but it has been scientifically researched.    The problem has occurred applying the results of the research to real life.

The science behind the idea is that when you wake-up, you haven't eaten anything for 8 hours or more, so there are no carbohydrates in your digestive system to get energy from.  Exercising in this situation will use one of the only fuels available, fat.  So, you will burn a higher portion of fat while you exercise.

Let me stop right here for a second.  This sounds great doesn't it?  Burning a higher proportion of fat during a workout sounds like exactly what you want to do.

The big problem here is that to subscribe to this line of thinking would mean we would have to ignore the most basic principle of weight loss, Calories in vs. Calories out.  This is the most fundamental principle of weight loss that I can guarantee your doctor understands to be paramount.  Whether you gain or lose weight is not about metabolism, age, or when you eat.  It's about how many calories you consume per day compared to how many calories you burn.  Let me summarize this concept just in case this is your first time hearing about it.  If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight.  If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight.  This is a scientific LAW that is as proven a concept as gravity.

Let's jump back to our before breakfast workout and see if we can apply this principle.  My first question to you is:  If you get up and workout before eating, but during the day you eat more calories than you burn, will you lose weight?  Keeping in mind that excess calories are stored as fat:  would you lose body fat?  I would let you answer these for yourselves if I wasn't so passionate about uncovering the truth.  NO!  You will not lose weight no matter how starved you are before exercise if your daily calories eaten are more than your daily calories burned.  You will store the additional calories as fat.  You could end up fatter, not skinnier.

On top of this, you cannot workout your hardest in a fasting state (no food for 8+ hours).  So, if you eat before your workout, you will be able to workout harder and maybe even longer because you have fuel.  This extra effort will help you burn more calories during the day.  If the food calories are kept the same you will lose more weight this way.  When I say eat before the workout, I don't mean 3 strips of bacon and pancakes with syrup and butter.  That definitely won't sit right in your stomach (can you say nauseous?)  This is also not a good idea for weight loss (too many calories).  Your morning pre-workout food could be as simple as an apple or a small bowl of oatmeal.  Something with some carbohydrate is good to break you out of your fast.  Avoid high fat foods before a workout.  After your workout make sure you have some protein and carbohydrates again to keep yourself fueled.

Hopefully this shed some light on this subject and you can be a beacon of knowledge for your friends and family.  Just in case you are unsure of the point of my ramblings, my recommendation to you is, eat some breakfast before you workout.  It just makes sense.

If you have any questions or comments please e-mail them back.  You can reply right to this newsletter.  I'm always looking for new questions.  If you have a question a lot of times other people are wondering the same thing, so step up and ask.
Next newsletter I'll finish off the Fat Burn Confusion Series with an article about the fat burning cardio zone.  Does it exist?  Can it help?  I'll have the details so you can get the best results possible.  I'll come up with some more outdoor activities for you also, summer is too nice to stay inside.

Until then...
