Why Do YOU Support CANY?

Swiller

When CANY honored Dr. Hillel Swiller(left) last May at our annual benefit, he spoke about the many reasons that he supports our organization.  "CANY enables people to reconnect and reintegrate into the family of humanity," said Swiller during his award acceptance speech.  Learn why he believes it takes more than just talent and skill to do what CANY does by

Now we'd like to know why YOU support CANY.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Did you know that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month?

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the "Day of Unity" in October 1981 conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national levels.  Then in 1987 the first DVAM was observed.  That same year marks the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline.(1)

As many of our E-News readers know, CANY provides drama therapy groups for survivors/witnesses of domestic violence through our partner site Palladia, Inc.

This week's group focused on the ways in which these women feel a loss of control in their lives as a result of their trauma.  Meredith Dean and Jenny Kravat Solomon, CANY co-leaders, asked the women how they are  able to maintain a sense of personal power and control.  "I always have control over my dreams and my future," said one participant.  "No one can take that away from me."  At the end of their session, one woman enthusiastically declared, "I feel empowered after being in this group.  I'm going to get my roommate to come next week!"

Help us continue to empower victims to become survivors.

Dr. Jacob Ham Leads In-service Training at CANY

Dr. Jacob Ham

On Wednesday, November 9th, Dr. Jacob Ham PhD will be leading the CANY staff in an in-service trauma training.  This session will allow our staff to continue their professional development trainings in trauma-informed treatment.

We invited Dr. Ham to join us for many reasons, including his expertise in the trauma field.  He specializes in individual and family psychotherapy using attachment theory and relational approaches and cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior disorders and traumatic stress. He also specializes in psychological testing and psycho-educational evaluations. Dr. Ham is leading the development of Beth Israel's Child Traumatic Stress Program.

Dr. Ham was also a strong proponent for CANY partnership with The Child and Family Institute.  CANY E-News readers may have read about this program last month.  "Based on my expertise," wrote Ham, "it is my opinion that drama therapy has many effective components that overlap with established treatments in the field.  I am a such a proponent of drama therapy, that [BI-SLR HEARTS] hired Creative Alternatives of New York to provide drama therapy to a population of severely emotionally disturbed and dual-diagnosis adolescents at the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Comprehensive Adolescent Rehabilitation and Educational Service (CARES High School.)"

We're looking forward to his visit next month!
