Broadway at the Boathouse...OVATION is a Success!

Callaway, Latessa, Huffman, Swiller, LaChanze

On Monday, we honored Cady Huffman (center) and Hillel Swiller (second to right) for their long time support of the transformative power of theatre and for their commitment to CANY.  With the fabulous food, auctions and entertainment we're very pleased with our success with Broadway at the Boathouse...OVATION.  Despite the rainy weather, we exceeded our 2010 benefit donations by well over 20%!

In addition, we're still applauding Ann Hampton Callaway, Dick Latessa, Cady Huffman, Hillel Swiller, LaChanze, pianist Gillian Berkowitz and director Dani Davis for their wonderful musical finale!  (Pictured above.)  If you weren't able to join us at the Loeb Central Park Boathouse, check out more photos on our Facebook page.

A good time was certainly had by all!  LaChanze summed it up nicely:  "What a beautiful night.  It was truly a pleasure to be a part of the success."

You can also watch Cady Huffman's moving acceptance speech ("CANY makes little miracles happen everyday") and one special guest's account of her time in a CANY drama therapy group.  Both can be found on CANY's YouTube channel.

Stay tuned for more benefit news!  We'll have more photos and Dr. Hillel Swiller's acceptance speech available to you soon.

Special Thanks go to our benefit photographer, Ben Strothmann.  Ben captured some very moving moments on Monday night.  His work can be seen at www.benstrothmann.com.

CANY in the Community

CANY drama therapy group leader with child

While our drama therapy groups are only held in the tri-state area, CANY is still part of a national community of the creative arts therapies.  CANY Program Manager Heidi Landis (left) recently ventured to sunny Florida to present at the American Society of Group Psychotherapy & Psychodrama's (ASGPP) National Conference.

She presented a three hour workshop entitled Behind the Mask: Exploring Self and Identity through Drama Therapy and Psychodrama"I used masks to guide an exploration of different aspects of self.  The workshop participants used pre-made masks as a projective technique to create characters and find a theme. After the characters and theme were found, I showed them how to use the CANY technique to create a group story."

In addition, Landis represented the drama therapy community on a panel entitled Drama Therapy and Psychodrama: Friends or Foes?  When asked why she was chosen for this particular panel, Landis said, "I'm on the board of both the National Association for Drama Therapy (NADT) and the ASGPP and one of the few folks who is both a drama therapist and a psychodramatist." Thank you, Heidi, for being the CANY ambassador!

As we announced last month, CANY will hold our next session of Drama As Therapy from July 22-24, 2011.

Check out the new playlist on CANY's YouTube Channel to see what other participants have to say about our training programs.

CEUs are available through a variety of organizations, including the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

All Mental Health Professionals, Artists and Educators who are interested in using the creative arts as a tool for healing & personal growth are invited to attend Drama As Therapy.  The program will be divided up into three components:  the experiential, the theoretical and the supervisory.  Among the many things that you will take away from this program will be how to structure a complete creative therapy session from warm-up to closure and how to use metaphor to safely explore trauma.  You will also be given a comprehensive training manual covering the CANY model of drama therapy.  CANY staff members Heidi Landis, RDT-BCT, LCAT, CP, CGP and Lucy McLellan, RDT-BCT, LCAT will lead this program.
