CANY Goes to the AGPA Annual Conference

CANY Program Manager, Heidi Landis and CANY Advisory Board Member Craig Haen presented their workshop "A Beginner's Guide to Utilizing Role Play in Therapy and Training Groups" on March 6th at the American Group Psychotherapy Association's 68th Annual Conference.

Held in Manhattan, the AGPA conference boasted over 1,000 attendees throughout the week's workshops, lectures and courses.  "It was an honor to present at this conference with Craig," said Landis (pictured above leading a CANY drama therapy group). "We were able to expose a group of professionals who generally know very little about the creative arts therapies to our field."

How does one begin to tackle such a task?  In their workshop, Landis and Haen spoke about, with several other topics, CANY's core principles:  metaphor as a therapeutic tool, group as a therapeutic agent and creativity as health.  The goal for Landis and Haen was not only to get the workshop participants to become familiar with drama therapy, but to actually be able to integrate new creative tools into their established work with clients.  Therefore, they taught how to use role play and projected techniques to use in combination with conflict resolution and with working through resistance within a group.  Landis, Haen and all involved thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon together.

CANY Featured in Wild Times

CANY drama therapy group, teens

Featured in this winter's edition of Wild Times, the student-produced newspaper of the John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy Charter School, is an article called "Mad Drama" written by Raquel Calderon.  Raquel, a high school student, talks about her experiences in CANY drama therapy groups in her article.  She encourages her fellow students to join her in group.  We are thrilled to reprint an excerpt from her article:

"I like drama because I feel like our Wildcat students have a class when they can express themselves.  When I'm there, I can see what people think and feel.  Then I would know who they are and what they've gone through in their lives.  Sometimes I feel like I can relate to them and make friends or maybe even cry.  I won't feel scared because I know if I say something it would be between the group and nobody else."

"In Drama you can feel free to speak up and say what's going on around you without being judged.  In Drama you can also find ways to defeat your problems.  This is why I love this class; I am able to speak up without getting into trouble or to be judged.  I can be myself and you can too."

CANY has been leading drama therapy groups at Wildcat Academy for almost 10 years.  Current CANY co-leaders John Rainer and Jason Frydman are continuing that tradition for this entire school year.

CANY Welcomes New Board Member

Jane Klemmer
CANY welcomes Jane Klemmer to its Board of Directors.  Klemmer (pictured left), is the founder of Klemmer Educational Consulting, LLC and comes to CANY via her childhood friend and fellow Board member Betty Morningstar.

With a BA in Music from Wesleyan University, an MBA from Columbia University and many years of experience in the corporate sector, Klemmer is an excellent match for CANY with her arts and business background.

When asked why she wanted to serve on a nonprofit Board of Directors, Klemmer responded,  "I wanted to get more involved with an organization.  I knew that I could give of my time and, given my varied experience, my expertise."   Choosing CANY's Board, however, became the obvious choice for her, especially after witnessing the struggles of one of her young clients.  She notes, "The mission and work of CANY resonated with me, especially since I have worked with people exposed to such unfortunate life situations who are stuck in destructive patterns with no tools for re-imagining their futures or seeing their potential.  I also began to comprehend the value that CANY provides to the larger community by giving these struggling citizens a means to help them become productive members of society."

Klemmer is looking forward to being part of CANY's growth as the organization continues its current Strategic Planning process.
