CANY Continues Diversity Training

Frydman, CANY drama therapy group
Jason Frydman, center, applies his Diversity Training in a CANY drama therapy group.

On October 20th, CANY again welcomed back Dr. Ma'at Lewis to explore diversity issues that arise in CANY drama therapy groups. Now, CANY staff member Jason Frydman (pictured left) gives us a full report on that day.

For the sake of our clients and ourselves, CANY's investment in the cultural competence of its staff allows each group co-leader to achieve full presence within the therapeutic encounter.
It is this investment in professional development that contributes to a supportive environment, validates each individual's subjective experience and propels our work forward.

As a new addition to CANY's full-time staff and to the diversity committee, I was eager to engage in a discussion about this critical area of therapeutic work. My eagerness was certainly shared by others. That Wednesday morning my colleagues and I engaged in a lively and intimate conversation led by Dr. Lewis.

CANY Presents with Bessel van der Kolk, MD

This past Monday, Program Director Lucy McLellan and Program Manager Heidi Landis not only attended but presented at the conference, "Developmental Trauma Disorder:  The Nexus of Attachment, Trauma and Brain."

Bessel van der Kolk, MD led the day-long conference sponsored by Beth Israel Medical Center's Division of Psychiatry.  Over 400 mental health professionals attended the event, which was held at New School University.

Both McLellan and Landis were not only pleased with the attentive, receptive audience, but thrilled that several members of CANY's board and staff were able to attend.  "It felt good to be the representatives of the Creative Arts Therapies at this conference," said Landis.  "We received a lot of positive comments from the audience in response to our work."

Stay tuned for the November E-News for a fuller report on the day.
