Greetings!

As we wind down the year, I want to first share some exciting statistics about the growth of tennis. Over the past 5 years, tennis ball and racquet sales are sharply up. Total players and returning players are up as well. Tennis is by far the leading recreational sport today in terms of growth with participation up 43% since 2000. North Carolina is one of the top states in overall growth accounting for 38% of the overall growth in USTA memberships nationally for 2008. On a local league level, we've also seen a dramatic 14% increase in participation over 2008. Raleigh has the largest adult and senior league in the state and are 2nd behind Lake Norman in mixed and 2nd behind Charlotte in combo.

I hope you all will congratulate David Bell and his fine staff over at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center for Outstanding Parks & Rec Dept. of the Year given by Metaltek for the state of N.C.  This is another indicator of the fine job they continue to do at one of the largest public facilities in the southeast.

Finally, I would like to announce that we have a new board that will take over the RTA in January. I will be stepping down as president and turning over that seat to Brian Rosenthal who is our current V.P.  It has been a privilege to work with the RTA and all the volunteers here in Raleigh and I look forward to working with many of you in the future.  Please welcome Brian and take the time to read his bio below.

Have a great holiday season!

Tennis Community Update
Susan Flanagan, Community Coordinator

I want to  thank all of you who helped make the Fall SMASH Junior Team Tennis and Quick Start program such a great success!  We have over 400 junior players who participated this fall in many very exiting matches.  The USTA uniforms look very impressive and breed energy and excitement on the courts, and all the juniors handled themselves in the true spirit of the game. We have the final tournament at Millbrook this weekend so please come out and watch some great tennis and support all of our Junior teams which have worked so hard all season.

Even though the tournament will wrap up this Fall Season, it doesn't mean we are taking a break until spring.  We encourage junior players of all ages to come out and play tennis all winter long.  Quick Start programs (ages 10 and under) are starting all over Raleigh.  This exciting format is giving younger junior players the tools they need to build on for full court play.  Smaller courts, smaller racquets, and slower balls lead to confident and skilled junior players.

If you get a chance, please try out the USTA Quick Start Format this winter, and get ready for a even more successful spring.
Spring registration begins for QuickStart and SMASH December 1st.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have regarding the Junior program at susankflanagan@aol.com.

See you on the Courts!

Susan
