Greetings!

Many of you have seen and heard about the reports of the growth of tennis across the country.  Player participation is up. Racquet and ball sales are up. Last year, North Carolina had the largest growth in league participation for the USTA in the entire Southern Section. Raleigh contributed to this accomplishment with a total increase of 18% across all of the leagues. And how about this amazing statistic; North Carolina accounted for 38% of the overall increase in USTA memberships nationally in 2008!  That means that there are a lot of great things happening with league play and tournaments at clubs, parks, and schools around the state.  Thank you all for your continued support!

Our RTA Futures Tournament was honored recently at North Carolina's Tennis Weekend in Pinehurst. David Bell, our city's tennis and tournament director, accepted the award for the 2008 Junior Tournament of the Year in memory of John Allen Farfour. David, his staff, and volunteers certainly deserve this fantastic recognition. We look forward to another outstanding tournament June 5th - 7th.

Finally, you might know him as the mild mannered, laid-back, Asst. Tennis Director for Raleigh, but there's a fire that burns within!  Be sure you read the "Meet Ken Glanville" section below. You will be enlightened and entertained!

Have a great spring!

What's the Call?
Katrina Gildemeister, Certified USPTA P1,  USTA Official,  USTA Referee

A player's cellular phone rings in the middle of a point, is the player entitled to a let? Is the opponent entitled to a let?

What's the Call?

The players cell phone who rang, is not entitled to a let because the player created the disturbance by bringing the phone to the court and not turning it off. If the referee did not notify the players that cell phones should be turned off and if this is the first time that the phone has rung, then the opponent is entitled to a let. If the referee notified the players or if the phone has rung more than once, the opponent may claim the point based on deliberate hindrance.

Cell phones are prohibited for all USTA league matches. They must be turned off.
