Greetings!

As we wrap up the Fall season and head towards Winter, I hope everyone continues to play and as you can see from our schedule, there are many opportunities for you to stay in great tennis shape.  This has been a record breaking year in terms of league participation, events and programming for Raleigh, and I would like to thank everyone who contributed especially our volunteers.  Congratulations also to our USTA and WTT League winners heading to Sectionals and Nationals.

Junior Foam Ball League
Foam Ball Flies into Raleigh
By: Beth Gargan - Community Coordinator

Foam Ball League Foam Ball tennis has flown into Raleigh, and it's scoring points with youngsters from across the city.

"We really wanted to bring this unique form of tennis to kids," said David Bell, tennis director for the City of Raleigh. "It's a perfect way to introduce the sport and get kids playing games right away."  Foam ball tennis is played with junior or regular rackets and oversized balls made from foam, much like a nerf ball.  Singles and doubles games are played on a modified court with easier scoring.   Teams practice once a week and have matches on Saturdays.

Foam Ball tennis is designed for kids ages 6-9, who have either never played or have limited exposure to the game.   In partnership with the Raleigh Tennis Association and the Raleigh Tennis Foundation, the City of Raleigh formed a fall league and attracted enough coaches and players to field five teams.

"Reports from the courts tell us that the kids and coaches had a great time playing this new form of tennis," said David Baird, RTA president. Teams wrapped up the season with a tournament in early November at Millbrook Tennis Center.

All indications point to more foam ball tennis in Raleigh's future! Look for more info on a spring foam ball tennis league in the next few months.

MyTennisGroup.com

MyTennisGroup.com allowed the Raleigh leagues to try out their scheduling software this fall for free.   Captains were able to create schedules and line-ups online. Automatic e-mail reminders were then sent to team members which encouraged players to confirm their availability.  This resolved many of the headaches captains normally face when taking on this responsibility.

Bookmark this site for your spring leagues!  This a great tool to help keep your team organized!

What's the Call?
Katrina Gildemeister, Certified USPTA P1,  USTA Official,  USTA Referee

What's the Call?
Recently, some players were discussing various types of strategies to use during an upcoming USTA League match that might throw their opponents off their game.  During the discussion, the merit of throwing in a soft underhand serve with under spin was mentioned.  There wasn't consensus on whether this strategy is within the rules. As a result, one of the players posed the question re the legality of serving underhand & whether they'd be accused of cheating.

Also, "What would be the ruling if someone did this as a 'quick serve' to surprise the opponent to try to win the point?"   The tactic employed by the Server certainly could be classified under the category of being somewhat "underhanded".

Ruling:  Underhand serves are legal. Many players use underhand serves to give their opponents a different look (throw their opponents off) or when they get nervous.  It is not considered cheating, unless a player quick serves their opponent.  The receiver must be ready.
