Raleigh Tennis Association Newsletter
Winter 2006/2007
Greetings!

The Raleigh Tennis Association (RTA) is a non-profit, volunteer organization operating under the umbrella of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and in conjunction with the North Carolina Tennis Association (NCTA). Our goal is to promote the game of tennis in the city of Raleigh and raise funds for junior programs and local charity organizations. If you would like to become an active part of this organization, please email us at info@raleightennis.com. We are in need of volunteers for 2007.

Each season, we will feature someone from our tennis community who we think you should get to know. This month it is David Bell, the City Tennis Director of Raleigh. We will also have a Tennis Help column, "What's the Call?" and hope to answer your tennis rules questions for the upcoming season.

Please email us any questions or recommendations for future newsletters.

Spring Leagues
Which League is right for me?

Most of the Raleigh Leagues will begin play in mid-February or early March for the Spring. Our area has multiple league opportunities for Adults and Juniors including Raleigh Area Tennis League, Junior Team Tennis, National Junior Tennis League, USTA Leagues, Capital League and Triangle Tennis. With so many leagues, it can be confusing as to which league would best fit into your schedule and provide the format you would like to play. We will provide all of the league information in the Spring Newsletter in early February. Our League Coordinators will give you a description of each league and how you can get involved. Get involved in one of the winter programs offered today and you'll be ready to hit the courts in one of the Spring Leagues.

*If you are interested in forming a Spring USTA League, registration is due by January 10th. Two Captains meetings will be held. (January 16th & January 18th).

For those of you who are looking for a team, there will be a Recruitment Night in January. More details soon on www.raleightennis.com.

Horseshoe Farms Park

There is a serious shortage of city recreational facilities in North and North East Raleigh. The population growth in the North Raleigh area which includes Wakefield, Brier Creek, and all the new development around 401, will create an even larger deficit. If you have tried unsuccessfully to find a city court to play on or had to play staggered matches in leagues, you are experiencing the shortage. Tennis courts and recreational centers at the new parks at Horseshoe Farms and Forest Ridge would ease the shortage but certainly not eliminate it. We need to let our city leaders know that both of these facilities need active recreation as well as the additional park land being considered at Durant Park.
