Developing the Young Horse
"Working in Hand - "Ponying Your Horse" Part 3
PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ By Lynn Palm In the last article, I covered ponying at the trot and backing. In this article I want to cover ponying outside of a confined area. All the preparations for ponying that were previously discussed still apply.
Ponying Outside of a Confined Area As soon as the horse is responding well to ponying in both directions as the walk and trot, it is time to get him out of the confined area. This helps to keep his interest. You can pony him along trails, in big areas like fields, and around the farm. This helps reduce the pony horse's tendency to become annoyed with the lead horse alongside him and allows you to spend more time ponying him.
You should always warm up by ponying the horse at the walk and trot in the paddock. Once the horse is consistently responding in the paddock, it is time to take him outside the enclosed area because it is more fun for you and your horse.
