Developing the Young Horse
"Working in Hand - "Ponying Your Horse""
PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ By Lynn Palm Ponying is often an overlooked technique for working a horse in hand. Ponying simply means leading one horse from another horse on which you are mounted. Some reasons for ponying are:
1. It is an excellent conditioning exercise for young horses that have not been started under saddle; 2. It allows a young or spooky horse to learn from an older horse to accept new surroundings; 3. It makes a horse that has difficulty being near another horse learn to be more sociable; and 4. It give you another training and conditioning tool to use to keep your horse from getting bored with the same daily training and exercising routines or when weather or footing conditions prevent you from riding him.

Breath Life into Training
Responsibility & Empowerment by Jenny Rolfe
The challenge of training and riding the horse carries with it a great responsibility to care for his welfare and comfort. If we can learn to understand the nature and ways of the horse, we can become more successful in achieving harmonious methods of training. This will become the constructive path for teaching the horse to gain his respect for our leadership whilst enhancing both his trust and confidence.
The most fundamental principle of training is for us to nurture 'trust' which takes many months and years to build, but can be destroyed in moments, by impatience and a lack of respect to the horse. He may be willingly giving of his best but with a vision for success we may be tempted to keep asking for more which can cause negative stress for both horse and rider. Whatever the level of training it is very important to maintain a sense of 'fun' within the discipline as excess tension can become extremely destructive, not only for performance but more importantly for the welfare and balance of both horse and rider.
