The year is coming to a close.  With New Years resolutions looming on the horizon we have two wonderful articles that include some really helpful exercises.  Combined with which ever diet plan is currently popular we can, at the very least, become better and stronger riders!

I would like to thank everyone involved in the introduction of our monthly newsletter.  Your support is very much appreciated.  To our readers, thank you for all your positive feedback.  It is good to know we are on the right track.

Happy a joyous holiday!

"The Goal-Riding Training Level, Test 1, Part 2"

This is the second article in a series that is a compilation of material taken from my years of training and riding, my previous series "Respecting the Rider's Form," and my notes for a series of articles for Dressage Today with writer Patricia Lasko. In this article I will continue on with the subject of rider form by giving you some lower body exercises to improve your form and balance.

Before I get into the exercises, I want to restate the goal for this series and the reason I am starting with the rider. The goal of this series is to prepare the rider and the young horse (or the unschooled or poorly schooled) horse for Training Level, Test 1. I am starting with the rider because a horse cannot move freely forward with a steady rhythm, as stated in the U.S. Equestrian Federation's "purpose" of Training Level, Test 1, if the rider is unbalanced in the saddle.

Breathing - The Key to the Half Halt

These fundamental words were written by Alois Podhajsky in his book The Complete Training of the Horse and Rider.

'The technique of breathing plays an important part in the performance of the horse, in the same way that it does with a human being. This technique will be the result of methodical training and will increase the powers of endurance. Excited horses, which do not carry the weight of their riders correctly, will be sooner out of breath and unable to produce as good a performance as well-trained horses. Regular breathing will reveal to the observer a physically and mentally well-balanced horse stepping with regularity. High blowing is a sign of well-being.'

My journey of horsemanship has taken me through a steep learning curve where I have gained some insight into the significance of Podhajsky's words.(more)
