NBCC's ANNUAL ADVOCATE SUMMIT
WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR?
Christine Benjamin, LCSW, Metastatic Program Coordinator

Someone once gave me a T-Shirt emblazoned with this question on the front of it:
WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR?
The question was surrounded by words like courage, justice, equality, giving and caring. Did I STAND for these things, I asked myself? And if so, how firmly did I stand, or what would I actually do for what I believe in?
I got an answer to this question in graduate school when I stood up for something I believed in. At first, there was a large number of students behind the cause, but in the end it was just two of us. We got what we wanted...information about certain marginalized groups integrated into the curriculum, and I learned what advocacy was all about.
Standing up for what you believe in may seem like a no-brainer for some. For others though, we come into advocacy because of our personal experiences. I'm not sure how many advocates were advocating for breast cancer before their diagnosis. But often, because of the injustices faced during "the journey," or the need to help others, or for a number of varied reasons, advocates abound in the world of breast cancer.
These advocates descend annually upon Washington, DC, to attend the NBCC Annual Advocate Summit, to learn, educate, and lobby and most recently, to support NBCC in The Breast Cancer Deadline 2020. Advocates from around the globe come together to support the agenda set forth by NBCC to eradicate breast cancer by the year 2020. NBCC is not in this alone; it is supported by other organizations with representatives on NBCC's board who rally their organizations to help.

AMAZON HEART: ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN WITH WOMEN'S CANCERS SHARE recipient of funds raised Amazon Heart was started in 2004 by two young breast cancer survivors. Amazon Heart adventures were created to provide a unique and inspiring peer support opportunity for under-served groups of breast cancer survivors, particularly the young. These events themselves create a broader social impact for women with breast cancer by funding projects that fill other needs, creating advocacy and awareness around breast cancer issues, and also provide volunteers and funding for local community social action projects.
Today, Amazon Heart provides adventures for women with women's cancers. The signature adventure is a 9-day motorcycle ride in California. You must have been personally affected by a woman's cancer to participate, and you can participate as a motorcycle rider or a van driver. Check out www.amazonheart.org
