Greetings and welcome to the October 2008 newsletter!

There has not been a lot of rest for us here over the summer!

Research in Europe
Gavin spent a fascinating 3 weeks in Europe, and made some real headway into research of Chinese bases along the Adriatic coast. It appears that there are a host of markers along a specific part of the coastline, not least canals, anomalous vegetation, Chinese ceramics and Chinese DNA, which would lead us to conclude that there was a significant Chinese presence along the coastline to Venice in the 1430's. This information will hopefully be released with the publication of the '1434' paperback which we are working on at present.

Travels in the USA
Meanwhile, Ian Hudson, who leads the research team in London, travelled to the West coast of the USA. He spent several fascinating days in Oregon visiting the sites of several purported Chinese wrecks. It is hoped that a representative from the University of Oregon archaeological department will preside over a sample drilling on the site some time in the next month. Past attempts at extracting samples have not been successful but our fingers are always crossed!

Ian then travelled to Los Angeles to discuss the '1421 movie' project which is moving along, slowly but surely. He also met with Bob Meistrell, co-founder of "Bodyglove", the wetsuit company. Bob had dived the Palos Verdes anchor site in the 1970's. Having reached the sea floor Bob and his team came across a swathe of what appeared to be ancient Chinese stone anchors. We will place photos of these on our website. Bob and his team managed to salvage a few of the anchors but many of them remain on the sea floor. The area is now overgrown with kelp and diving the site is not recommended. The anchors were investigated by 4 separate authorities but none of them could come to an agreement on the origin of the anchors. Some state that they were mined by contemporary Chinese fisherman in the 19th century from local Californian rock. However, many, as we do, believe that the manganese deposits that have built up on the anchors show that they must have been under the sea for centuries. Also the rock type has an exact match in China.

We are hoping to re-open the investigation into the anchors in the light of the great quantity of evidence showing a pre-Columbian Chinese presence in California since '1421' was published. Rock art in Australia
Lastly we would like to draw your attention to an archaeological find of huge importance in Australia.
The discovery of an extraordinary collection of rock art recording life in the area for the past 15,000 years, until 50 years ago.
Alongside ancient paintings of thylacines, a mammal long extinct on the mainland, are images documenting modern-day inventions - a car, a bicycle wheel, a biplane and a rifle - as well as portraits of a missionary and a sea captain.
Scientists documenting the rock art, spread across at least 100 sites in the remote Wellington Range, say it ranks among the world's finest. It also appears to rewrite Australian history, undermining the widely held assumption that the continent was isolated and largely unvisited until the First Fleet arrived in 1788. The paintings suggest that the people of northern Australia have been interacting with seafaring visitors from Asia and Europe for hundreds, possibly thousands, of years.
For more information please visit the following link:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl d/australasia/australian-history-rewritten-in-rock-art- 951828.htmlbr> It will be interesting to see whether any Chinese junks pop up in the paintings!

Until then, happy hunting!

Best wishes,
The 1421 / 1434 team
