Greetings and welcome to the 1421 July 2006 newsletter.

Summer is finally here at the 1421 HQ in London, and there are some exciting changes ahead of us.

Charlotte Harris Rees Re-Publishes Her Father’s Book
In 1972 Dr. Hendon M. Harris Jr., a third generation missionary who had grown up in China, discovered an ancient map in an antique shop in Korea. His intimate knowledge of Chinese language and history enabled him to recognise the significance of his discovery and carry out research that led him to see the connection between the land of “Fu Sang”, mentioned in ancient Chinese literature, and America. His book, The Asiatic Fathers of America (Chinese Discovery and Colonization of Ancient America), was published in 1975 in Taiwan. After his sudden death in 1981 his map collection was kept under a bed in his son’s home, his book went out of print, and his work was virtually forgotten. In 2003, the growing interest in pre-Columbian exploration of America, caused in no small part by the publication of 1421, inspired his daughter, Charlotte Harris Rees, to revise and re- publish her father’s book. Frank Lee joins Gavin on the “1421 Board”

An open letter from Gavin below describes our important recent re-organisation.
Frank will be taking on the role of commercial executive, while Gavin will continue to research and write as normal.

Ref. Expansion of the ‘1421’ Team
Since ‘1421’ was published by Bantam Press in November 2002, the book has been published in a further 23 languages and is now on sale in 105 countries. The website has grown in parallel so that today 60,000 visitors a month visit from over 120 countries. Publicity arising form the books, the website and T.V. documentaries in English, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and German has resulted in an avalanche of new evidence. We now have 16,000 subscribers to our website - as many as Oxford or Cambridge Universities have undergraduates.

This growth has been achieved by the dedicated hard work of the ‘1421’ Team led by Ian Hudson and unpaid volunteers - notably Frank Lee, Chris Higham, Geoff Mandy, Rosanne Hawarden, Cedric Bell and Malcolm Brocklebank. Gavin is indebted to these people, to his publishers Bantam Press, to Midas Public Relations, Pedalo website designers, to Pico exhibition organisers and thousands of others without whom the ‘1421’ story would not have been told.

The stream of new evidence has grown to a river. Moreover in the past six months there have been major events and discoveries – Liu Gang’s publication of the ‘1418’ Map; Paul Chiasson’s book “Island of the Seven Cities” which has become a best seller, and Dr. S. L. Lee’s publication of Zheng He’s medallion found buried in North Carolina – perhaps evidence of Zheng He’s personal arrival and possibly death there.

In my opinion Frank is the ideal person to lead the ‘1421’ team into the next phase of growth and I wish him every success in doing so. He assumed his position on 1st July 2006.

Once again thank you all so much for your kindness and support, which I am sure you will extend to Frank Lee.

Gavin Menzies

Best wishes,
The 1421 team
