Association Donation to Yellowstone Tops $760,000 This Year

The Yellowstone Association will give its highest annual donation ever to Yellowstone National Park in 2012, funding requests ranging from new multimedia exhibits and resources for the park's website to librarian salaries at the Yellowstone Research Library and supporting the 11th Biennial Scientific Conference on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in October. The funded requests totaled more than $762,550.

About $280,000 will help create new exhibits and multimedia components for the planned renovation of the Albright Visitor Education Center in Mammoth Hot Springs and new outdoor exhibits for the Fort Yellowstone self-guided tour. The park expects to complete both projects prior to the National Park Service Centennial in 2016. This brings the total that the Yellowstone Association has "banked" for this project to $1.7 million.

Also funded is a pilot program for a Future Stewards/Future Leaders youth program that will bring 75 to 100 socioeconomically disadvantaged young people to Yellowstone this summer to work with and learn from park staff. Participants will develop career and leadership skills while learning about Yellowstone, stewardship, and preservation.

Yellowstone's website, www.nps.gov/yellowstone, is the most-visited in the National Park System, with use growing eight percent annually. The need for new and updated content, including the annual Resources and Issues Handbook, is constant. Association donations will help fund creation of new interactive maps and charts and videos of pertinent events and speakers. Also being funding are the Greater Yellowstone Science Learning Center, a web portal about natural and cultural resources at www.greateryellowstonescience.org, and Yellowstone Science. The latter publication covers scientific research in the park and has a global readership.

"One of the primary aims of the Association is to support Yellowstone by funding worthy programs and projects the NPS budget can't cover," said Association Executive Director Jeff Brown. "Our members can be very proud of all that their Association donations are doing to support education in the park, and to enhance the experience of current and future visitors."
