The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking public input as it gathers information to develop a range of future changes that might be acceptable for areas at Yellowstone National Park's North Entrance and the boundary with Gardiner, Montana. The public has until June 18 to submit suggestions and comments.

"We know a lot of the issues," said park spokesman Al Nash. "We want to make sure we capture everyone's concerns and information. . . . There could be things other people see that we don't, and we're trying to tap into these ideas."

The most prominent gateway when tourists first began to visit Yellowstone, the North Entrance has problems today. They include traffic backups from the station where visitors enter and at Roosevelt Arch; safety issues for pedestrians and park employees across the entry area; the inability of large vehicles to negotiate the hairpin turn before the arch; a shortage of parking and amenities; congestion around the park's Gardiner transportation buildings; and motorists' confusion about how to enter from the intersection of Route 89 and Park Street in Gardiner.

NPS will use the comments to develop and assess a range of acceptable changes as it prepares an environmental assessment and improvement plan. They will be released this fall, when public comment will again be sought.

The Yellowstone Association will host a related open house at the headquarters building in Gardiner from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 8.
