Will you be introducing the wonders of Yellowstone National Park to young people this summer? What fun! Did you know the National Park Service's web site has a special section of quizzes, games, and puzzles to introduce children of all ages to the park before they arrive? Once in Yellowstone, kids can complete activities to earn Junior Ranger or Young Scientist badges.

Antler and Horn MatchOne of the great, goofy games is the Antler & Horn Match, in which kids use their computer curser to put the correct head gear on Yellowstone animals. If they are incorrect, they create some wildly zany critters. Also on the site is the downloadable, 3-D computer game WolfQuest: Survival of the Pack and, for little humans, the delightful Animal Alphabet Book with Sound. What does a baby bison sound like? (Please finish this article before you click away to listen!)

The website also introduces visitors to the in-park Junior Ranger and Young Scientist programs. The first is for ages 5 to 12, the second for ages 5 to adult. Once in Yellowstone, kids can purchase the 12-page Junior Ranger activity packet at any park visitor center for $3. The Young Scientist packets are available at Canyon or Old Faithful Visitor Centers for $5. (Parents should check out the Young Scientist toolkit for the gear needed to perform the experiments.) Kids return their completed packets to any visitor center to get the best Yellowstone souvenir of all: a Junior Ranger or Young Scientist badge they can keep, along with the learning and memories, for a lifetime.
